One man, 100,000 toothpicks, and 35 years: An incredible kinetic sculpture of San Francisco

(click images for detail) Thirty five years ago I had yet to be born, but artist Scott Weaver had already begun work on this insanely complex kinetic sculpture, Rolling through the Bay , that he continues to modify and expand even today. The elaborate sculpture is comprised of multiple “tours” that move pingpong balls through neighborhoods, historical locations, and iconic symbols of San Francisco, all recreated with a little glue, some toothpicks, and an incredible amount of ingenuity. http://www.thisiscolossal.com/2011/04/one-man-100000-toothpicks-and-35-years-scott-weavers-rolling-through-the-bay/

UPDATE: Check out the Cicada Project to see where our community has taken this idea! I’m going to start off on a seemingly wild tangent today, but stick with me — I do have a purpose. A few years ago, I read some interesting stuff on periodical cicadas . We generally don’t see a lot of these little guys as they spend the vast majority of their lives quietly tunnelling away underground and munching on tree roots. http://designfestival.com/the-cicada-principle-and-why-it-matters-to-web-designers/

http://lancecardinal.blogspot.com/2011/03/scratch-built-palisades-muppet-theatre.html This is one of the coolest things I have ever made!! I am a huge fan of the muppets and I wanted to share this special project with you that was very close to my heart. This is my scratch built Muppet Theatre Miniature Playset.

Scratch Built Palisades Muppet Theatre Playset

This project was conceived by the late, great Bill Moggridge in his last weeks as director at Cooper-Hewitt. He wanted to make museum-themed headshots of all staff to hang in our common meeting area. Each staff person had to bring in their favorite object for their photo. He passed away about halfway through the project, and I never got to make a portrait of him.

These pictures of bioluminescence in the Gippsland Lakes in my gallery have proven quite popular, so it seems time to provide a story to accompany them. But this is not a short story, rather a convoluted one of fires and floods, of microscopic algae and the inspiring, remarkable and surprising beauty of nature. The story begins with alpine bushfires in Victoria, which started on 1st December 2006 when over 70 fires were started by a band of thunderstorms and lightning strikes which moved across the state.
