Review: Sweet Tooth Vol. 1: Out Of The Deep Woods | Trade Reading Order. This review contains minor spoilers.

Skip To The Verdict? » I didn’t mean to pick up Sweet Tooth. I’d heard a lot about it, sure, but I had a lot on my plate already. I just happened to be in on the bookstore level of the building my fiancée works in and slipped it off the rack while I was waiting for her. I accidentally finished it. Like the tempting candy that eventually lends the main character his nickname (along with the title of the comic), Sweet Tooth is undeniably seductive. As the newest celebrated Vertigo title, in a long line of successes for that extraordinary imprint, it starts right off with the weird.

Artist/writer Jeff Lemire knows how to get pages turning and he isn’t afraid to take risks. But, accompanied by Gus’ dialogue, innocent and frightened, it’s the right first page for this book. Gus has been living with his father alone in the woods. Oh, and Gus is a hybrid – “My dad says so few kids was born after the accident, that god decided to make ‘em special. Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter This unique new book examines the realist painter’s most fundamental tools: color and light. The book bridges the gap between abstract theory and practical knowledge, providing useful information about sources of light, color relationships, pigments, backyard optics, visual perception, surfaces and effects, and atmospheric conditions.

According to Spectrum, "This book slices though the confusing and often contradictory dogma about color with laser-like precision and backs it all up with some astonishing examples of Gurney's own paintings as well as with a welcome (if brief) survey of underappreciated masters who perfected how light reveals form and content. One man, 100,000 toothpicks, and 35 years: An incredible kinetic sculpture of San Francisco.

Thirty five years ago I had yet to be born, but artist Scott Weaver had already begun work on this insanely complex kinetic sculpture, Rolling through the Bay, that he continues to modify and expand even today. The elaborate sculpture is comprised of multiple “tours” that move pingpong balls through neighborhoods, historical locations, and iconic symbols of San Francisco, all recreated with a little glue, some toothpicks, and an incredible amount of ingenuity. He admits in the video that there are several toothpick sculptures even larger than his, but none has the unique kinetic components he’s constructed. Via his website Weaver estimates he’s spent over 3,000 hours on the project, and the toothpicks have been sourced from around the world: I have used different brands of toothpicks depending on what I am building.

See the sculpture for yourself at the Tinkering Studio through the end of June. Lie back and think of England. Bioluminescence in the Gippsland Lakes | Phil Hart - Astronomy, Photography and Peak Oil.

These pictures of bioluminescence in the Gippsland Lakes in my gallery have proven quite popular, so it seems time to provide a story to accompany them. But this is not a short story, rather a convoluted one of fires and floods, of microscopic algae and the inspiring, remarkable and surprising beauty of nature. The story begins with alpine bushfires in Victoria, which started on 1st December 2006 when over 70 fires were started by a band of thunderstorms and lightning strikes which moved across the state. This was an early start to the fire season following an extremely dry autumn and several years of drought conditions before that. The fires were in remote, rugged alpine areas, which combined with bone dry forest fuels to make them very hard to control. Smoke from the Great Divide Complex fire spreading over south-east Australia [MODIS image via Romsey Weather Site] In the end, it was not any ordinary rainfall event that arrived that winter.

The Great Sleeping Bear sculpture 190 x 73 x 78 cm fake fur, rubber, foam, zipper, glass eyes, textile 2007 This work is inspired by the news in Bavaria, 2006- the news was about a bear, which escaped from the Italian side of the Alps to the Bavarian side. He was called a problem bear, as he was the first wild bear since 170 years.

He evoked huge discussion among people and government whether they should kill or leave him alive. In the end, he was hunted down. I was interested in this tragic story of the bear, as well as the starting point of this tragedy; this bear was generating many different ideas and emotions in people as illusions in reality by just crossing the borderline between countries. In order to recreate such incident, I made an object with the realistic look of a bear, which modifies sleeping bag functionality. 'Breathtaking' Document Reveals Pepsi's Logo is Pinnacle of Entire Universe. @Kendal Liddle: I agree as a Sr. AD in advertising, client presentations can be such a joke. But...there are justifications, after all, we are talking largely about aesthetics, and if we have a better argument than the marketing people on the client side (who just voice their own opposing opinion just to shine or for recognition at their own company), we win.

Consider too, that there is such a thing as brand equity and Coke simply has more with me. I prefer it to Pepsi, which is too sugary. Coke branding is ubiquitous world wide. EVERYone knows, no matter what language. So consequently brands don't go changing their identity willy-nilly. In logo design, the concept of gestalt is a consideration, as in, is the mark cohesive. What's left? On the other hand, the client is to blame as well.

This is a little project that, as is often the case, started off as a throwaway doodle. With a little encouragement from my friend Tom Dougherty, (link on the right) I turned it into several drawings. What's fun is that the Star Wars universe really blends with the goofy, strangely-named world of Dr. Seuss pretty easily. I have a couple more of these up my sleeve which I hope I can get around to soon. Stay tuned, and enjoy! Update: Added a Bantha and some raiders! Thanks for all the swell comments, everyone! It was a car accident. Nothing particularly remarkable, but fatal nonetheless. And that’s when you met me. “What… what happened?” “You died,” I said, matter-of-factly. “There was a… a truck and it was skidding…” “Yup,” I said. “I… I died?” “Yup. You looked around. “More or less,” I said. “Are you god?” “Yup,” I replied. “My kids… my wife,” you said. “What about them?” “Will they be all right?”

“That’s what I like to see,” I said. You looked at me with fascination. “Don’t worry,” I said. “Oh,” you said. “Neither,” I said. “Ah,” you said. “All religions are right in their own way,” I said. You followed along as we strode through the void. “Nowhere in particular,” I said. “So what’s the point, then?” “Not so!” I stopped walking and took you by the shoulders. “How many times have I been reincarnated, then?” “Oh lots. “Wait, what?” “Well, I guess technically. “Sure.
