More » NOVA shoes by Zaha Hadid for United Nude. Architect Zaha Hadid has designed a pair of limited-edition chrome-plated shoes with 16.5-centimetre cantilevered heels (+ slideshow). The NOVA shoe, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects for shoe brand United Nude, claims to be the first ever shoe to use rotation moulding in its manufacture. The shoe also employs injection moulding and vacuum casting. The footwear features a striated surface resembling geological formations similar to those used in Hadid's architectural projects such as the Galaxy Soho development in Beijing.
The metallic chromed vinyl rubber upper is lined with leather while the platform and heel are fiberglass and the outsole is rubber. The shoes were launched yesterday at the L'Eclaireur store in Paris, the same day that United Nude presented a 3D printed shoe designed by fashion designer Iris van Herpen during Paris Fashion Week. “Zaha consistently reinvents the program with her own ideas and interpretations,” says United Nude founder Rem D Koolhaas. Grace is an artist whose art practice includes making drawings, paintings, photographs, installations, videos, Internet-based artwork, and large public sculptures. She lives and works in New York City and in a converted synagogue in Keyport, New Jersey, with her husband, Stephen.

Grace Graupe-Pillard has always been interested in using the human body in her artwork. She learned to draw and paint the human figure by spending four years at the Art Students League of New York doing figure studies. Grace’s earliest professional artworks are larger-than-life oil paintings of nudes and portraits that were painted in the 1970s and 1980s. But not all of Grace’s artwork is about the nude figure.

Zaha Hadid Architects have been selected to work alongside AECOM for the design and construction the Al Wakrah Stadium and Precinct of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar. The 45,000-seat stadium will be nestled within a rich cultural fabric of traditional Islamic architecture, historical buildings, distinctive mosques and archeological sites that belongs to one of the oldest inhabited areas of Qatar, just south of Doha. As noted by the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee, embracing the identify of this cultural heritage will be a crucial part to the success of the stadium.
The design will respond to the consistently hot temperatures of the region by integrating cooling-technology systems with climate-control requirements for renewable energy production. In addition to the stadium, programs will include an aquatics center and other sporting facilities, along with a spa and commercial space. Work on the project is set to begin immediately. There are lots of ways in which logos are designed: logos can be crowdsourced, companies may pay millions for a logo, or an average designer can be asked to create a logo at reasonable rates. And there is no way to judge what a logo design is really worth. An unknown logo designer can stumble upon a winning image accidentally, or the world greatest logo designer can end up designing a lousy logo.
How can you design an outstanding logo? Are there any secrets? Skyscraper for bees by University at Buffalo students. High-rise living is no longer just for people. A team of architecture students from the University at Buffalo has recently constructed a skyscraper for a colony of bees (+ slideshow). Erected amongst a desolate group of disused grain silos beside the Buffalo River, the seven-metre tower provides a new hive for honey bees that had formally formerly taken up residence in the boarded-up window of an old office block.
The tower is clad with a honeycomb of hexagonal steel panels. Triangular perforations speckle the surfaces, allowing light to filter gently inside. The bees are housed in a hexagonal wooden box suspended near the top of the tower. The base of the box is glazed so visitors can enter the tower and look up into the hive. The box is also attached to a system of pulleys so that beekeepers can bring it safely down to ground for maintenance tasks. The tower represents the winning entry of the university's Hive City competition, which asked students to design a habitat for the bees.
Floating table by Ingo Maurer for Established & Sons. Milan 2013: German designer Ingo Maurer's table without any legs has gone into production with British brand Established & Sons. The white table top appears to float at first glance, but is in fact supported on an extended arm from each of the four black chairs. Ingo Maurer devised a hidden mechanism beneath the table that allows the chairs to be pulled out so users can sit down. Rectangular and circular surfaces are available.
The wooden table was first conceived in 2012 and has since been put into production with Established & Sons. The furniture was shown at Ventura Lambrate in Milan last month. We've recently featured a coffee table by Foster + Partners made from a stretched metal disk and a shape-shifting table that transforms from a square to a triangle. Milan 2013: bamboo trees sprouted up around a topographical landscape of stone and water at this installation created by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma in Milan last month. As one of three architect-designed installations for the Urban Stories exhibition of contemporary living, Kengo Kuma's Naturescape was designed as an interpretation of a traditional Japanese Zen garden. Cascading stone strata formed a series of undulating curves around the room. Pools of water formed at some of the lowest levels, while others contained clusters of bamboo trees planted in gravel. "The clean and pure Pietra Serena stone is used so as to recreate a topography that, as in real landscapes, moulds the shape of water, guides our walking and gives a context to the objects to better admire them," says Kengo Kuma and Associates. Other recent projects by Kengo Kuma include an experimental house in Japan and a fashion boutique in China.

Backyard Room is a pre-fabricated structure designed by the architects and builders at Archiblox which achieves a minimum six star rating and can be assembled in a matter of weeks. Passive solar design, sustainable materials, water conservation and energy efficiency all contribute to a garden room that achieves at least six star rating. The Rooms are architecturally designed and built by Master Builders, with each garden studio designed to fit into any backyard, whether it’s a single fronted terrace or a large open garden.
Co-founder of Backyard Room and architect Bill McCorkell said: “These days whether people are working from home, starting their own business or doing creative projects, we know the importance of having a space that is removed from the hustle and bustle of the family home,” says co-founder and architect Bill McCorkell.
“At Backyard Room we are offering that space which is architecturally designed, sustainable and cost effective.” Borgia Pope And Vatican Hid Painting Linked To Native Americans For Over 500 Years | Native American News. This recently restored painting in the Vatican, created in 1494 by the Renaissance master Pinturicchio, has a small depiction of naked men with feathered headdresses. This may be the first European depiction of Native Americans. The scene, just above the tomb of Jesus, is too small to be seen in this view of the entire painting but is shown in the photo below.
(Courtesy of Vatican Museums) May 5, 2013 — A newly cleaned painting in the Vatican, which dates to 1494, may be the first European depiction of Native Americans. The painting had been largely ignored for more than 500 years. Only now, the Vatican says a detail in a newly cleaned 15th century fresco shows what may be one of the first European depictions of Native Americans. For close to 400 years, the painting was closed off to the world.
The fresco, The Resurrection, was painted by the Renaissance masterPinturicchio in 1494 — just two years after Christopher Columbus first set foot in what came to be called the New World. Weekend Edition. Ad of the Day: IBM Makes the World's Smallest Movie ... With Atoms. IBM and Ogilvy make a big impact with the smallest of building blocks in their latest video, billed as "the world's smallest movie"—a rudimentary stop-motion animation made by IBM scientists using a special microscope they invented to move atoms around on a surface. The movie, titled "A Boy and His Atom," consists of nearly 250 frames of stop-motion action and tells the simple story of a boy named Atom who dances and plays with an atom. By drawing viewers in with the film (a technological marvel that will no doubt be passed around far and wide), IBM then uses an engrossing behind-the-scenes clip to tell its larger story—about how the company has worked at the nanoscale for decades to explore the limits of data storage, among other things with real-world applications.
Andreas Heinrich, a principle investigator at IBM Research, is the most eloquent voice of the project. While IBM works on that, it hopes this movie accomplishes a simpler goal: getting kids to love science. Photography. How To Play Bass To Born On The Bayou. These Photos Are Actually Pencil Perfect Drawings. At just 22 years old, Italian artist Diego Fazo has developed the skill to create photo-realistic drawings using a simple charcoal pencil. His latest creation, pictured below, has drawn hundreds of positive comments on his Deviant Art profile. Don’t tell me you can tell the image below is a drawing and not a high-definition photograph, because I don’t buy it.
In fact people were so skeptical this incredible piece of art was drawn by hand that young Diego Fazo had to put up some photos of the work in progress just to lay doubts to rest. And looking at his-mind-blowing masterpiece, can you really blame people for questioning it’s hand-drawn? Like other talented artists who started their careers on Deviant Art, Diego is a self-taught pencil master whose technique matured with the passing of the years. He started out as a tattoo artist, and developed a passion for creating photo-realistic drawings. Scroll down for more of his awesome drawings, and check out his Deviant Art profile, as well. A metaphorical question tends to arise as our judges parse through the hundreds of photograph entries for our annual Peeps Diorama Contest. With as much time and thought as participants spend on creations, have Peeps dioramas become more than a craft project made with lovable holiday treats? Could they be considered works of art? This year the question feels more pertinent than ever, as many participants turned to a variety of artwork for inspiration. Semi-finalist Mark Rivetti created a magical rendition of Georges Seurat’s painting “Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte,” which brought smiles to judges’ faces for its beautiful use of color and attention to detail.
Matthew Smith, 32, of Falls Church, selected a post-impressionist style painting as his muse. His diorama, “Vincent van Peep Self Portrait” mimics Vincent Van Gogh’s self portraits, using different shades of Peeps and Mike and Ikes to create his likeness. Writing. Writing. Writing.
