Collection 2: Working At It

It houses about eighty people over the summer, although only about ten or twelve of them stay for the long, dark winter. Many of them are scientists, but there are also support staff, who all have important jobs – people like chefs, kitchen hands, cleaners, mechanics, and engineers. In Antarctica, you use up lots of energy just keeping warm, so you need good, nutritious food to keep up your energy levels. But if you’re living at Scott Base, you can’t duck out to the local takeaways for a snack – and the chefs can’t just pop out to the supermarket, either.

In fact, feeding the community at Scott Base takes a lot of organisation because everything has to come in from outside Antarctica. So who’s in charge? The new chefs arrive each year at the beginning of October. Donna Wightman is working as the winter chef. How does the food get there? During the summer, there are weekly flights by Hercules aircraft. Home - ACER Shop Online. Don't forget to check out our Special Book Sale in the SALE category.

Literacy and Numeracy Studies. Literacy & Numeracy Studies Journal. Literacy and Numeracy Studies is an international refereed journal, published out of the Centre for Research in Learning and Change, which aims to promote research, scholarship and critical analysis of policy and practice concerning the many and complex ways that adult literacy and numeracy are implicated in adult life.

Literacy & Numeracy Studies Journal

One of the aims of the journal is to extend narrow functional and externally imposed definitions of literacy and numeracy to multiple, open definitions that focus on what people do with their skills, and how they use different texts and modalities in differing contexts. They decided it was timely to celebrate their coming of age by funding the development of new resources that would build on and update elements of these resources for teachers to use in a range of settings and made accessible online. The original publications benefitted from the input of teachers who were at the time pioneering the new field of adult numeracy. These teachers, who had backgrounds in mathematics, language and literacy and primary education, came together through professional development events to share their growing ‘wisdom of practice’.

Sharing their experience and practices not only aided their own professional growth, but benefitted others through the publications that were influenced by their discussions. Beth Marr. Ask yourself Q 2.1 What is the connection between the LLN skills I have identified in the units and the way these skills are used in the workplace?

Topic 2: Identify LLN skill requirements essential to workplace performance

The language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills that a learner will need to use on the job depend greatly on the job role itself and the workplace the person is in. When you identify a particular LLN skill essential to the performance standard described in a unit of competency (either by referring to the unit’s Foundation Skills section or by identifying trigger words in its performance criteria), it is critical that you think about what this skill might look like on the job.

Many units might call for the use of ‘workplace documentation’ for example – which clearly requires both reading and writing. Some required responses to ‘workplace documentation’ may be as simple as ticking a check box, while others may require detailed explanations of processes or reports of incidents.
