Foundation and Aims The doctoral program in plant sciences (PS) was founded in 2009, initially with a focus on plant molecular biology, within the Dahlem Research School (DRS) at Freie Universität, and was expanded in 2011 to include the other branches of plant sciences represented within the Focus Area Dahlem Centre of Plant Sciences (DCPS).

The goal is to provide a structured program for doctoral candidates in the various subjects encompassed by the plant sciences. The doctoral program, which is offered in German and English, is organized as cooperation of 14 research groups at the Institute of Biology. It is embedded into the structure of the DRS, with its education programs and additional course options. The program also includes the teaching of transferable skills, which includes knowledge transfer, scientific management, and foreign language skills. Know your enemy: next generation disease resistance breeding (WULFF_J15CPTH) : Postgraduate Research. Written by on October 1, 2014 PhD : 4 year Project Project Start Date: 01 Jan 2016 Supervisor: Brande Wulff Department: Crop Genetics The wheat stem rust fungus Puccinia graminis f.sp. tritici (PGT) is a devastating disease of wheat which has been associated with multiple crop failures and famine. A key to stabilizing wheat yields during the Green Revolution was the development of stem rust resistant wheat varieties. We are pursuing a transgenic approach to control the disease based on pyramiding cloned stem rust resistance (Sr) genes from wild grasses in combination at a single locus in wheat. The overarching long-term objective for this project is to identify and exploit PGT effectors as tools in wheat disease resistance breeding. Tuition fees are covered for UK/EU rate.

This potentially enriches both practices, whilst also engaging public audiences in scientific creativity in innovative ways. In our project, we view the idea of studio + laboratory through the dual prism of museum + open biology. Both the museum and the open biology space occupy the territory between the studio and laboratory thus promising an even closer engagement and both place public accessibility center stage. In an exhibition room Medical Museion will install an open biology lab – a space that allows participation and developing of experiments and which has potential for democratizing biological science.
