How To Count Rows in Garter and Stocking Stitch. Recently asked everyone over in the Facebook group what sort of issues they were struggling with in their knitting.

How To Count Rows in Garter and Stocking Stitch

One of the big pain points for a lot of people seems to be figuring out how to count rows when knitting. So, today I’m going to show you how to do just that! Count rows in Garter Stitch To count your rows on a piece of garter stitch, you need to count the horizontal ridges, on the right side of the work, not including the cast on row. Once you’ve figured out how many ridges you have, you want to multiply that number by two, as each ridge is equal to two rows of knitting.

So, in this example, we have 6 whole ridges, plus the stitch on the needle which we count as half a ridge, which make 6.5 ridges. Another method is to count the ridges on both sides – not including the cast on row – and add them together. Knitting and Picking up stitches along an edge. Once the main body of the knitting has been completed, it is often necessary to add extra finishing rows for neck bands, button and buttonhole bands and other edgings.

Knitting and Picking up stitches along an edge

Sometimes these sections are knitted separately and sewn on but it is quicker and neater to pick up stitches along the edge and knit directly onto these. To pick up stitches along a cast on, cast off or shaped edgeAlways working under a whole stitch (never through a single thread), insert the point of the knitting needle under the first stitch, pass the yarn round the needle and draw a loop through to form a stitch. Continue for as many stitches as are required (Fig.66).
