Activity Gather a group of young children and give one lemon to each child. Then ask the children to "get to know your lemon. " Children will examine their lemons -- smell them, touch them, throw them in the air, and roll them around. Next, ask the children to describe how they recognized their lemons. After exploring these ideas, collect the lemons again but this time peel the lemons before placing them in the basket.

This 15-minute activity can have a long-lasting effect, especially if children are reminded of the lesson in times of conflict. Variations The lesson also works well with apples or potatoes. Source. It's the "here today" and perhaps, "gone tomorrow" nature of our profession and likely other professions, too, that dictate our conversation and our efforts in the classroom. Yet, one buzzword that's experienced a huge renaissance, not because it ever went away, but because of its relevance and importance to the changing landscape of education is relationships. Read to Feed Helps Kids Learn to Love Reading

Read to Feed helps teachers impart an ethic of global giving to kids while also fostering their reading skills. With Read to Feed, kids get so excited about giving animals to help children in poverty, they may not even realize they're also helping themselves by reading more. Just like adults, kids are more enthusiastic about their efforts when they know they’re making a difference to others.

In Read to Feed, children (individually or as a group) get sponsors for each book they read during a certain time period. At the end of the program, the group pools its funds and decides which animals to donate through Heifer International, to help other families reach self-reliance. The program even has a snazzy new online resource center that makes it easy for teachers to learn about the program and get their materials.
