This Robot is Going to 3D-Print a Steel Bridge

What will this additive technology do next? Well, 3D print a steel bridge in mid-air, of course. MX3D, a research and development startup company, will use robots to 3D print a pedestrian bridge across one of Amsterdam’s canals. The versatile six-axis robotic arms will ‘draw’ steel structures in 3D, starting from one side of the canal and building across until it reaches the other end. The robot will also print its own support, which allows it to work autonomously. “This bridge will show how 3D printing finally enters the world of large-scale, functional objects and sustainable materials while allowing unprecedented freedom of form,” designer Joris Laarman said on the project Web page.

Drop Everything - Jetpacks Are Real. Two SSDs survive after more than 2 petabytes of write tests. SSDs are great.

Two SSDs survive after more than 2 petabytes of write tests

They're small and fast, but their storage method is inherently flawed—writing data erodes the individual memory cells at the nano level, meaning they have a lifetime that can be measured in terabytes of data being rewritten. Most drive manufacturers conservatively estimate for 20 to 40GB per day for the length of a three- or five-year warranty, but that doesn't tell us how much abuse SSDs can actually take. Middle-School Dropout Codes Clever Chat Program That Foils NSA Spying. The National Security Agency has some of the brightest minds working on its sophisticated surveillance programs, including its metadata collection efforts.

Middle-School Dropout Codes Clever Chat Program That Foils NSA Spying

But a new chat program designed by a middle-school dropout in his spare time may turn out to be one of the best solutions to thwart those efforts. Prompted by Edward Snowden’s revelations about the government’s intrusive surveillance activities, loosely knit citizen militias of technologists and security professionals have cropped up around the world to develop systems to protect us from government agencies out to identify us online and grab our communications. John Brooks is now among them. Brooks, who is just 22 and a self-taught coder who dropped out of school at 13, was always concerned about privacy and civil liberties. Four years ago he began work on a program for encrypted instant messaging that uses Tor hidden services for the protected transmission of communications.

Vonkil's Batthead Is A Rechargeable, Remote Controlled AA Battery. I spent my formative years using up AA batteries at a frenzied pace, and I can’t count the number of times my parents said they wished they could zap my trusty Game Boy dead.

Vonkil's Batthead Is A Rechargeable, Remote Controlled AA Battery

While there’s nothing they can do to salvage my childhood now, the folks at Vonkil Technologies have worked up something that should help a new generation of parents remotely kill toys at will. Enter the Batthead, the star of a new Kickstarter campaign that wants to make your rechargeable AA batteries much, much smarter. Here’s the concept in a nutshell: they have essentially taken a rechargeable AA battery and crammed a Bluetooth 4.0 radio and an accelerometer into it. Continuance is a set of batteries with a USB interface on the side. The batteries are rechargeable plus dole out some juice to stranded gadgets that are starved of power. Build Your Own Server. Aerogel Aerogel holds 15 entries in the Guinness Book of Records, including "best insulator", and "lowest-density solid". Sometimes called "frozen smoke", aerogel is made by the supercritical drying of liquid gels of alumina, chromia, tin oxide, or carbon. It's 99.8% empty space, which makes it look semi-transparent. 27 Science Fictions That Became Science Facts In 2012. We may never have our flying cars, but the future is here.

27 Science Fictions That Became Science Facts In 2012

From creating fully functioning artificial leaves to hacking the human brain, science made a lot of breakthroughs this year. 1. Quadriplegic Uses Her Mind to Control Her Robotic Arm At the University of Pittsburgh, the neurobiology department worked with 52-year-old Jan Scheuermann over the course of 13 weeks to create a robotic arm controlled only by the power of Scheuermann’s mind. The team implanted her with two 96-channel intracortical microelectrodes. 2. Once the robot figures out how to do that without all the wires, humanity is doomed. 3.

64 Things Every Geek Should Know - laptoplogic.com. The term ‘geek’, once used to label a circus freak, has morphed in meaning over the years. What was once an unusual profession transferred into a word indicating social awkwardness. As time has gone on, the word has yet again morphed to indicate a new type of individual: someone who is obsessive over one (or more) particular subjects, whether it be science, photography, electronics, computers, media, or any other field. A geek is one who isn’t satisfied knowing only the surface facts, but instead has a visceral desire to learn everything possible about a particular subject. A techie geek is usually one who knows a little about everything, and is thus the person family and friends turn to whenever they have a question.

Its been a running joke among some friends and I. Nothing was planned or documented. As I tell people what it has been through, most simply don’t believe me. I guess I wouldn’t either. I want to do this so I have documentation, of what has been done, and how it worked. I want to know how much can it take and still function. Its all been done already, I'm just going to keep track this time. Play SandPotting SoilBaby Powder1 bucket of water for cleaning2 buckets for mixing ingredients.
