Every time I have had the opportunity of going there I have come face to face with incredible tragedies but also with the unwavering hope of its people. Ever since my first journey to South Africa in 1989, where I saw Walter Sisulu walk free in Soweto after years of imprisonment, I continue to be both deeply moved and deeply shocked by all the stories I have witnessed and heard. Every time I step onto African soil I know I will experience something deep, something that inevitably leads to a search for the meaning of life, something that, for me at least, surfaces from deep within when I am in Africa.
In the space between two facing photographs there is a story. The photographs represent the two extremes of the story that links them: the beginning and the end. On march 11, 2011 one of the worst earthquake and Tsunami hit Japan and Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, damaging its safety and cooling systems. In a few days the core of the nuclear power plants number 1,2,3 started melting down with the release on air and on the ocean of massive amount of radioactive radionuclides. The Japanese government created an evacuated area of 20 km around the nuclear power plant of Fukushima Daiichi. From 20th April the Japanese government refused the admittance to the “No-Go Zone” to everyone, especially to journalists and photographers.
But… From the first days of July till now I went inside the No-Go Zone several times to document the situation. Inside the exclusion zone the contamination has a “leopard skin” distribution, as well as outside, where there are places heavily contaminated up to 60 kilometers from the plant, including parts of the cities of Fukushima and Koriyama. Dear friends and students I have got the pleasure to let you know that after many years of hard work I’ve been able to publish my book on 14 years of my life in Cuba. In May of this year accompanied by seven of my students (we have nicknamed them The Magnificent Seven) we met in a small town near Verona to help my new “baby” come to light.
The book is simply called BazanCuba. It only took 14 years of life and photography in Cuba, and afterwards two intense years of editing, layout, pre-press, and printing to bring the new book to the world. I first arrived almost by chance to the island in the fall of 1992, where I started up a love story that lasted for 14 years. On the streets of Havana, I found again my lost Sicilian childhood, unconsciously sought in vain during my previous trips around the globe.
