The Guardian gets ready to liveblog the live-GIFing of tomorrow's presidential debates The Guardian has teamed up with Tumblr and four animated GIF-makers and together they will be 'live-GIFing' tomorrow's presidential debates.

Animated GIF files are popular on the social network and blogging platform (for example, see the news cat GIFs, of cats responding to news situations). The Guardian and Tumblr are opting to use the sharable animations to provide the "most animated coverage of the 2012 presidential debates". According to a post on the Tumblr staff blog, Guardian reporter Adam Gabbatt will be guest editor of Tumblr's election blog, plus will be liveblogging on the Guardian to "bring you the full stories behind the GIFs". The four GIF-makers who, according to the staff Tumblr, will be "cranking out instant animations of the best debate moments, from zingers to gaffes to awkward silences" are: Tumblr editorial director Topher Price, Bobby Finger, Lacey Micallef, and Mr GIF.

President - 2012 Election Center - Elections & Politics from CNN.com. Overview. By Amy Mitchell and Tom Rosenstiel of PEJ In 2011, the digital revolution entered a new era. For news, the new era brings mixed blessings. New research released in this report finds that mobile devices are adding to people’s news consumption, strengthening the lure of traditional news brands and providing a boost to long-form journalism.

At the same time, a more fundamental challenge that we identified in this report last year has intensified — the extent to which technology intermediaries now control the future of news. Two trends in the last year overlap and reinforce the sense that the gap between the news and technology industries is widening. There are already signs of closer financial ties between technology giants and news.

The problems of newspapers also became more acute in 2011. Footnotes.
