The Sun Ra/El Saturn Collection, sound recordings and other material, 1950-1993. History of the Collection The collection was amassed by John Corbett, a recognized scholar of Ra's work and its cultural and historical context, and his wife, writer and educator Terri Kapsalis. The contents of the collection were acquired by the couple in 2000, sparing the recordings and ephemera from destruction following the death of Alton Abraham, Sun Ra's business manager and the original owner of the materials.
The recordings were donated to ESS in August 2007 and the Ra-related visual and written materials were given to the University of Chicago Jazz Archive. An initial assessment of the collection content and condition was provided by Corbett. The majority of the tapes are unidentified; some tapes have been incorrectly labeled. Many items contain multiple recording formats and speeds spliced together, and a number of tapes were in fragile condition, making more than one play hazardous. Sun Ra, A Space Odyssey: From Birmingham to The Big Apple, the quest begins. Given the rather daunting size of the Sun Ra catalog (over 100 known recordings, with plenty of semi-bootleg releases still turning up 20 years after his death) as well as its extreme stylistic breadth, there’s no set answer or even a remotely definitive list to give to someone when they ask “Where do you start?” When it comes to diving into the life’s work of the enigmatic Sun Ra. In my own case, it was literally some Sun Ra CDs that I found, and that worked just fine for me, but finally veteran music journalist Kris Needs has provided a methodical and archival approach to Sun Ra’s oeuvre with the new 3CD box set, Sun Ra: A Space Odyssey Dating back to Sun Ra’s earliest days as a working musician and arranger in Chicago and his initial flight as a bandleader, for the most part, what’s on display here is slightly adventuresome big band music.

This audio archive is a vast assortment of rehearsal tapes, masters, live recordings, speeches and poetry left behind by Sun Ra and manager Alton Abraham. Although an interesting proposition I was reluctant to dive into it since my working band People, Places & Things has gained much of it’s success dealing with re-inventing and positioning the obscure Chicago hard bop scene circa 1954-60. With that in mind I wasn’t interested in developing a reputation for re-igniting the past. After some thinking and discussions with collaborator Jason Adasiewicz I came up with the notion of forming a large group to perform this project AND to specifically enlist his talents to accomplish the task.

My Sun Ra Dream & The Creative Audio Archive: New lecture recordings revealed. At the height of my Sun Ra scholarship, before Mr. Corbett and his team preserved the collection we are learning about as the years pass, I had a dream once. In it, John and Jacson took me to what I interpreted to be the attic of the House of Ra in Philly. Off of it, was a cramped cubby in which we sat as they showed me tape after tape. Reels were packed in film canisters stacked to the ceiling in rows, covering each wall. It was a vivid and beautiful dream, and to read about the recordings in the Creative Audio Archive fulfills part of a long-time fantasy for me. In addition to unheard compositions, rehearsals, and early Arkestra concerts, the most desirable and mythic recordings of them all were from Sun Ra's stint as a guest teacher at UC Berkeley.
