Blackraptor. Harriet Tubman | Ascension. The raison d'être for the band, Harriet Tubman, is an almost aching musical yearning for a complete freedom. It is a freedom from genre and certainly on Ascension, complete freedom from style as well as style. This what the 20th Century Spanish poet and playwright, Federico Garcia-Lorca described as the heart of duende, a holistic alternative to style and mere virtuosity, seeking an elevated level of delving into the depths of the soul so that the music dilates the mind's eye, in order to render its intensity almost unendurable. In fact, virtually unbeknownst to the artists—guitarist Brandon Ross, bassist Melvin Gibbs and drummer JT Lewis, also including the opposing trio of trumpeter Ron Miles, and turntablists, DJ Singe and DJ Logic—all the elements of melody, harmony and rhythm melt away to create a completely spiritual corkscrew of notes, voices and accents.

The magic is also in the opposing forces of each trio. Support All About Jazz Go Ad Free! Alice coltrane. Alice Coltrane on harp. Alice Coltrane Quartet, Live in Warsaw, 1987. Kinebees zounds. Interview by Chris Becker Writer and musician Michael Veal is the author of Dub: Soundscapes and Shattered Songs in Jamaican Reggae and Fela: Life and Times of an African Musical Icon..

Michael's band Aqua Ife plays Jan 30, 2010, 10pm at The Shrine (2271 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd, NYC) and February 12, 2010, 8:30 PM at Theatre Romain Rolland (Sons d’Hiver Festival) 18, Rue Eugène Varlin, Paris (Villejiuf), Ile-de-France. Michael Veal’s book Dub had a profound impact on me as a composer when it was released in 2007. There are a lot of composers today who talk about the influence of club music on their work. But the influence of Jamaica – and specifically the innovations of producers/engineers/artists who pioneered many recording and compositional techniques we take for granted these days – is often absent from the discussion. Veal’s book not only connects dub to today’s popular music, but to early to mid 20th century and 21st century forms of electronic composition as well.

Howard Nishioka- Street Songs (Otaro, 1979) *320kbps. Street Songs (1979) is a secret leftfield voyage into Hawaiian psych unknowns. Just check the furious fuzz of the sample track below ("Carnivourous Dogaramus").

Nishioka's guitars cast a wide net from electric-detonated space solos to acoustic-led meanderings verging toward American Primitive territory. There is cohesion, though, in his essential looseness of delivery. Looks like Street Songs has become a real holy grail for a lot of folks. FYI- The following year, Nishioka laid-down one of the wildest 7"s of all-time as a leading member of that raw feedback-punk phenomenon, The F**kin Flyin A-Heads. 320 vinyl rip by yours truly. Kindred Spirits When you listen to the music of Build An Ark, you are truly convinced that music can inspire those who are in need of spiritual healing.

It is their mission to spread peace and unity through the music. It is because of tragic events such as the Rodney King beating and riots that took place in band leader Carlos Nino’s hometown of Los Angeles and 9/11 that moved him to deliver the fantastic “Peace with every step” and that follow that one up with “Dawn”. As impressive as those releases were “Love Pt. 1” is without a doubt their best yet. Carlos and the ensemble blend elements of 60’s soul, jazz and even a little folk that captures the spirit of John Coltrane’s latter work, as well as Pharoah Sanders and Joni Mitchell.

This is one of the most mind-blowingly weird anecdotes MAGNET has ever published. Ten years ago, writer Mitch Myers profiled prog-rock legend Daevid Allen (Soft Machine, Gong), who told us of his strange encounter with actor Sherman Hemsley (a.k.a. George Jefferson). Here is the story of Hemsley’s obsession with flying teapots and his alleged den of iniquity that housed an LSD lab, a harem of naked girls and crack/freebase depots on every floor. In 1999, I interviewed musician Daevid Allen for MAGNET at a small recording studio in San Francisco. Allen was an odd sort, with plenty of old stories to tell. Back in the 1960s, he was a founding member of wonderfully creative British band Soft Machine. In his life, Allen has hung out with everybody from William Burroughs, Jimi Hendrix, Bud Powell and Paul McCartney to Syd Barrett, Keith Richards, Richard Branson and a whole bunch of other famous people that he can’t remember.

Guitarist, composer, singer, songwriter Brandon Ross has worked with everyone from Muhal Richard Abrams, Don Byron, Bill Frisell, Leroy Jenkins, Oliver Lake, Arto Lindsay, to Joan Osborne, Henry Threadgill, and many others.

Self described as “Future-folk music”, Ross’ music is at once pastoral, dissonant, intimate and avant-garde. On February 16th at Roulette, Ross will present Blazing Beauty, his acoustic-based ensemble with Stomu Takeishi (acoustic bass guitar), JT Lewis (drums), and Brandon Ross (guitar/banjo/vocal). ROULETTE: Tell us as about the work you’ll be doing at Roulette. BRANDON ROSS: The work I’ll be presenting at Roulette on the 16th is an extension of a long-standing excitement about and interest in string bands and string-percussion based “folk” music ensembles.

As a guitarist and an improviser, I find myself a part of a continuum of musical process that is ancient, ubiquitous, and (it would seem) infinitely varied. Move along with the soundtrack of Metro's screechy, wailing escalators. Take the west side escalators down into the guts of the Columbia Heights Metro station and you'll be swallowed by the sound - an otherworldly mewl of screeching metal, an aviary of chrome-throated ravens taunting you as you descend into your workday.

But slow down a minute. Step to the right, unclench the jaw and ask yourself: Could this be music? There's a secret jazz seeping from Washington's aging Metro escalators - those anemic metal walkways that fill our transit system with a crooked approximation of Ornette Coleman. Like human breath pushing through polished brass, they honk and bleat and squawk and . . . why are you still wearing those earbuds? Every rush hour is a chance to immerse yourself in the accidental music of worn-down Washington. But it can only sound like music if you want it to. "There can be aestheticized ways of listening," says Emily Thompson, a professor at Princeton specializing in the cultural history of sound. So do it. Listening tips. Click Track - Listen to the winners of our Remix the Metro contest! Photo illustration by Christopher Meighan. In last Saturday's Washington Post, pop music critic Chris Richards wrote about the secret music of Washington's run-down Metro escalators.

Here on Click Track, we asked you to come up with some music of your own by remixing the Metro's strange creaking sounds. The response was overwhelming. Listen to our winners and numerous honorable mentions below! First place: Joe Boston, "Get On Now" The squeaky, three-note sequence made by the escalators at the Smithsonian stop reminded us of jazz.

It apparently reminded our first place winner, Joe Boston, of Baltimore club music and Timbaland. Second place: John Yaya, "Last Train to Limbo" This contestant used the escalators' moans and groans to add a foreboding mood to this bizarre surfy, jazzy tune. Third place: Judy, "Farragut Metro Flutes" Both breathy and glitchy, we really enjoyed Judy's new-age-ish approach to softening Metro's squeal-n-grind. Honorable mentions: Gangly Verbs, "When Robots Become Lovers" The type of music you can really step to. Duet for Theremin and Lap Steel, live Paris, 2007 « Continuo’s weblog.
