The raison d'être for the band, Harriet Tubman, is an almost aching musical yearning for a complete freedom. It is a freedom from genre and certainly on Ascension , complete freedom from style as well as style. This what the 20th Century Spanish poet and playwright, Federico Garcia-Lorca described as the heart of duende , a holistic alternative to style and mere virtuosity, seeking an elevated level of delving into the depths of the soul so that the music dilates the mind's eye, in order to render its intensity almost unendurable. In fact, virtually unbeknownst to the artists—guitarist Brandon Ross , bassist Melvin Gibbs and drummer JT Lewis, also including the opposing trio of trumpeter Ron Miles , and turntablists, DJ Singe and DJ Logic —all the elements of melody, harmony and rhythm melt away to create a completely spiritual corkscrew of notes, voices and accents.

Here's a wonderful clip I had not seen before of Alice Coltrane playing a harp solo in concert. I know nothing more about this clip than what you see here. I was lucky enough to see her perform twice, but she stayed with piano and organ. This is a real treat.

Sound Colour Vibration is expanding yet again and this time it will be in the context of rare and excellent sounding bootlegs which we will upload to MegaUpload for your easy download access. We will only upload material that is not commercially available, this will be a series for those who have heard many albums from the artists we cover and want to find out and hear more, artists like Miles Davis, Mahavishnu Orchestra, etc. We will focus on a few artists but our archive will expand in the coming months. John McLaughlin is an English guitarist whose vast understanding of music and spirituality touched the lives of many around the world. In the early 70′s he started Mahavishnu Orchestra, which was a mind shifting collection of talent and creative power. This all came after he came from England to play with Miles Davis extensively.
The three compositions on Gyre were formed from varied location-based sound actions, which were then processed and composed in the studio. These acoustic recordings bear the trace of empty barns, forests, fields and hills. Material origins of wood, glass, air and metal are transformed into abstraction. The result balances tangibility with disassociation, focused microscopy with breathy expanse, and raw physicality with ghostly glimmer.

Street Songs (1979) is a secret leftfield voyage into Hawaiian psych unknowns. Just check the furious fuzz of the sample track below ("Carnivourous Dogaramus"). Nishioka's guitars cast a wide net from electric-detonated space solos to acoustic-led meanderings verging toward American Primitive territory. There is cohesion, though, in his essential looseness of delivery.
In the wake of the disaster that struck the country of Japan and the still unresolved dangers its people now face, composer and saxophonist John Zorn has organized three special benefit concerts in New York City. Shows will be held at Columbia University's Miller Theater, the Abrons Arts Center, and the Japan Society to raise funds to directly benefit earthquake and tsunami victims. Each night will feature performances by some of the most amazing artists working in modern jazz, rock and experimental music, including Sonic Youth, Yoko Ono, Mike Patton, Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, Philip Glass, Ryuichi Sakamoto,Thurston Moore, Elliott Sharp, Norah Jones, and many more.
