Readingeducator | A view on libraries, literacy and education. 21st-Century Libraries: The Learning Commons. Libraries have existed since approximately 2600 BCE as an archive of recorded knowledge. From tablets and scrolls to bound books, they have cataloged resources and served as a locus of knowledge. Today, with the digitization of content and the ubiquity of the internet, information is no longer confined to printed materials accessible only in a single, physical location.

Consider this: Project Gutenberg and its affiliates make over 100,000 public domain works available digitally, and Google has scanned over 30 million books through its library project. Libraries are reinventing themselves as content becomes more accessible online and their role becomes less about housing tomes and more about connecting learners and constructing knowledge. Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, Massachusetts has been in the vanguard of this transition since 2009, when it announced its plans for a "bookless" library. This great video clearly outlines Genius Hour movement happening in classrooms across the world! After reflecting for a few months on how to initiate #GeniusHour in my classroom I finally jumped in with both feet, my Genius Journal (click to download) and the question, “What do YOU want to learn Today”?

The response, learning, level of engagement and finished products were incredible! I found my Genius Journal to be incredibly helpful in guiding my students, allowing them to follow a process (QUESTION-PLAN-RESEARCH-CREATE-SHARE-REFLECT) and record their learning. Of course, the process is fluid during their 20% in the classroom. The most critical component of Genius Hour is insuring that your students formulate good, thought provoking questions. Students shared their learning through iMovies, Keynote presentations, SMART Notebook presentations, speeches and demonstrations. Questions? Please remember to SharesEase! Like this: Like Loading... 50 Ways to Teach With Current Events. Media Coordinator Walkthrough. The Six Ts of Effective Elementary Literacy Instruction. It seems that, finally, those who make educational policy – at the local, state, and federal levels – have begun to recognize just how much good teachers matter. A series of studies have confirmed what was probably obvious from the beginning. Good teachers, effective teachers, matter much more than particular curriculum materials, pedagogical approaches, or "proven programs" (Allington & Johnston, 2001; Darling-Hammond, 1999; Duffy, 1997; Pressley, et al, 2001; Sanders, 1998; Taylor, Pearson, Clark & Walpole, 2000).

It has become clearer that investing in effective teaching – whether in hiring decisions or professional development planning – is the most "research-based" strategy available. If we are to hope to attain the goal of "no child left behind," we must focus on creating a substantially larger number of effective, expert teachers.
