Bottled History. Mountains of Books Become Mountains. I thought I’d seen every type of book carving imaginable, until I ran across these jaw dropping creations by Guy Laramee.
His works are so sculptural, so movingly natural in their form, they’ve really touched me. His works are inspired by a fascination with so-called progress in society: a thinking which says the book is dead, libraries are obsolete and technology is the only way of the future. His thoughts: “One might say: so what? Do we really believe that “new technologies” will change anything concerning our existential dilemma, our human condition? See Also INCREDIBLE 3D ILLUSTRATIONS JUMP OUT OF THE SKETCHBOOK Carving into the discarded stacks of books, he has created fantastic, romantic landscapes which remind us that though our fascinations and the value we put on different ideas have changed, we as a species have not evolved that much. “Mountains of disused knowledge return to what they really are: mountains. Dopo il lavaggio e l’essiccazione, rimuove con precisione chirurgica ed estrema cura i segmenti in eccesso, usando una tecnica simile a quella del tradizionale paper cutting. He collects leaves from his local residence area, and once he has finished the process of drying he uses a surgical scalpel to cut the figure. ‘My geometric or figurative designs mostly come from my innate observation of nature and the personal metamorphosis I have gone through in recent years.’ Living in an existential metamorphosis for some time has turned him into a man who is increasingly aware of his inside, his shadow, and he has found that art is the best way to communicate his thoughts, feelings and frame of mind. I made this piece after seeing photos of Jimmy John Liautaud, founder of Jimmy John's, killing endangered animals on safari in Africa.
I was enraged and disgusted! I'm happy I've never eaten at a Jimmy Johns and after this I never will. Thanks for bringing my attention to this Lisa. The company that is responsible for these killing "adventures" is Johan Calitz Safaris. I can't stand to look at those pictures, they're just vile. I wanted to make something beautiful and sad.
