[ home | news | projects | photos | art | pen | voice | vid | contact | search ] Ethics of terraforming. The ethics of terraforming has constituted a philosophical debate within biology, ecology, and environmental ethics as to whether terraforming other worlds is an ethical endeavor. Support[edit] On the pro-terraforming side of the argument, there are those like Robert Zubrin and Richard L. S. Taylor who believe that it is humanity's moral obligation to make other worlds suitable for Terran life, as a continuation of the history of life transforming the environments around it on Earth. They also point out that Earth will eventually be destroyed as nature takes its course, so that humanity faces a very long-term choice between terraforming other worlds or allowing all Earth life to become extinct.

Dr. Dr. Richard Taylor more succinctly exemplified this point of view with the slogan, “move over microbe”.[3] Some critics label this argument as an example of anthropocentrism. Martyn J. Criticism[edit] McKay put his views in these words: Future prospects[edit] References[edit] Further reading[edit] Mars on Earth | Motherboard. Twenty minutes north of the tiny town of Hanksville sits a lone cylindrical building tucked into the craggy red surface of Utah’s San Rafael Swell. The spaceship-like structure houses the Mars Desert Research Station, an environment created by the Mars Society, a growing non-profit organization that supports the research, exploration, and eventual colonization of the mysterious red planet. The swell, chosen as a simulation site for its topical resemblance to Mars, provides researchers with an opportunity to live and work in an environment that’s as close to outer space as is earthly possible.

Their “Mars Analog” station is staffed by a small group of Mars devotees (some scientists, some not) living in complete “sim”—wearing spacesuits when they venture outside, consuming only dehydrated, shelf-stable food like Bisquick and ghee, and abiding by the “if it’s yellow, let it mellow” adage in an effort to conserve water. In fact, when it comes to longterm space flight and isolation, studies like the European Space Agency’s Mars500 have already yielded important answers about how astronauts can best handle the physical and mental challenges. In November of 2011, six astronauts emerged from a space flight isolation simulation that lasted 520 days. During this lengthy time period the international crew is subjected to many of the types of stresses and tasks that would be part of a journey to Mars, which includes total isolation from earth, having only fellow crew members, as well as 20-minute delayed voice contact with mission control and conversations with family members similar to other space missions.

Evidence that the Red Planet harbors life and has for eons was discovered by the author by examining NASA photograph PIA10214, a westward view of the West Valley of the Columbia Basin in the Gusev Crater that was taken by the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit in November 2007 and beamed back to the Earth.

This photograph has been the subject of public speculation since January 2008, when what appeared to be the figure of a human female was found jutting from the edge of a plateau. Intrigued by this anomaly, the author subjected PIA10214 to further photo-analytic scrutiny and discovered that the photograph contains other images of human and animal life forms that constitute the first evidence of life on Mars. In this paper, the author presents his initial data related to his discovery of life on Mars in PIA10214 in five areas, namely, Reptilian species predominate.

The length of the shadow indicates that the dust plume reaches more than 800 meters, or half a mile, in height. The tail of the plume does not trace the path of the dust devil, which had been following a steady course towards the southeast and left a bright track behind it. The delicate arc in the plume was produced by a westerly breeze at about a 250-meter height that blew the top of the plume towards the east. The westerly winds and the draw of warmth to the south combine to guide dust devils along southeast trending paths, as indicated by the tracks of many previous dust-devils.

The dust plume itself is about 30 meters in diameter. Numerous bright tracks trend from northwest to southeast. It is interesting to see that these tracks are bright, whereas dust-devil tracks elsewhere on Mars are usually dark. This page is a statement of how MoonEstates.com Ltd view the "legalities" of selling extraterrestrial property. 1. What is the law today? With regard to extraterrestrial property sales, two treaties exist today. These treaties do not refer to "ownership" as such, they more commonly refer to the "exploitation of the Moon and other celestial bodies for profit purposes", and extraterrestrial property sales distinctly fall under that section. The Outer Space Treaty of 1967 explicitly forbids any government from claiming a celestial resource such as the Moon or a planet. What does this mean? The United Nations and all countries that signed the Outer Space Treaty became aware of this vital omission almost immediately after the treaty was ratified in 1967. 2. The Moon Treaty, had it been ratified, would have forbidden the exploitation of Space, the Moon and other celestial bodies for profit motives. 3. 4.

Artist Jon Lomberg, working with a team of space scientists, announces the launch of a new message artifact destined for the surface of Mars: a sundial whose four edges each contain a panel of text and image, written by Jim Bell and the MER sundial team and accompanied by graphics designed by Lomberg. NASA’s latest and most ambitious scientific mission to Mars is the Mars Science Lander called Curiosity. Like its predecessors on NASA’s Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity, this new sundial doubles as the camera color calibration target for the Mastcam camera system that is the rover’s primary instrument for imaging the surface of Mars.

The illustrations of the message try to evoke our species’ long fascination with the Red Planet. Storybook Wishes for Martian Rovers. The Martian rovers Opportunity and Spirit have represented optimism, hope and even cuteness to millions of people dreaming about discoveries on the Red Planet. How appropriate, then, that the newest rover, Curiosity, should carry a sundial with sentiments and illustrations worthy of classic children’s literature.

Curiosity blasted off onboard an Atlas 5 rocket on November 26 and is currently heading for Mars with an August 2012 landing date. The sundial doubles as the color-calibration target for the Mast camera (Mastcam) that will capture the Martian landscape. Its image will be transmitted from Mars to Earth many times, and students might use it to learn about the ways that such simple but elegant instruments can be used to determine the time, date, season and latitude on a planetary surface with atmospheric hues different from our own. And it will remain on Mars for the benefit of future space travelers. Colleges Battle It Out in Mars Rover Competition [Slide Show]: Scientific American Slideshows. Great Gallery, Utah.
