In this six-part series, I will highlight apps useful for developing higher order thinking skills in grades K-5 classrooms. Cogs of the Cognitive Processes I began to think about the triangular shape of Bloom's Taxonomy and realized I thought of it a bit differently.Since the cognitive processes are meant to be used when necessary, and any learner goes in and out of the each level as they acquire new content and turn it into knowledge, I created a different type of image that showcased my thoughts about Bloom's more meaningfully. Here is my visual which showcases the interlocking nature of the cognitive processes or, simply, the "Cogs of the Cognitive Processes". Great iPad apps for K-8 Tablet computing and mobile devices promise to have a dramatic impact on education. A growing number of schools across the world are jumping on the digital bus and embracing iPads (less often, other tablet products) as the latest tool to teach literature in multimedia, history through games and simulations, and math with step-by-step animation of problems. Not surprisingly, student scores improve when they use iPads and their interest in school soars. I say not surprisingly because students love digital toys and in my experience work harder and longer if given the opportunity to do so with any of the digital offerings (ipods, laptops included).

In my school, we have been rotating one set of Pads this year through K-8. Drawing AirSketch Free–Turn your iPad into a wireless whiteboard! Back to School App-pack. The image above was created using PhotoshopTouch on an iPad and was then uploaded to Thinglink to create the hotspots. The summer is quickly winding down & a number of teachers will be returning to their classroom with new mobile devices (iPads). Throughout the summer I have been conducting workshops on iPad integration with EdTechTeacher and I thought it might be helpful to pull together a back to school list of apps structured around specific classroom goals. While many schools may already have an Apple VPP program already in place, I know a number of teachers will also be purchasing the apps themselves. Therefore, I will do my best to include both a pay & free app for each objective. I want my students to create & publish video: iMovie (4.99) - record, edit and publish movies directly to the web from iMovie. I want my students to respond to polls / take quizzes: Reflection (Mac / PC download - $15) - Wirelessly mirror an iPad to a MacBook or PC.

Education - Apps. 7 Free iPad Apps for Educators and Students. If you haven’t noticed, we’re a bit obsessed with the iPad here. As I write this there are half a million apps available in the App store.

With limited funds, how do you choose the best apps for your students? Here are the guidelines I use: Match content to the student, not the student to the contentThere are heaps of educational apps with pre-loaded content available. While these seem fantastic for their ease of use, they rarely have just the right content that you are seeking for your students. Look for opportunities to create rather than just consumeCreating is a higher order thinking skill. Seek flexibility of useWe all work within limited budgets in schools and while apps are not particularly expensive, the costs do begin to mount up. Here's some apps that I think have potential as digital tools in the classroom. Evaluating Apps You may find this Evaluation Rubric for Apps from Harry Walker and Kathy Schrock a useful tool when making selections (click on the rubric to enlarge): Middle School iPad Apps. The invention of the tablet PC has created a new medium for book publishing. Interactive books are everywhere, and have revolutionized the way people consume the printed word. With the recent software available to allow easy creation of interactive books and with the race to bring these products to market, there seems to be a more and more dilution of quality and a loss for the meaning of interactivity.

When publishers create new eBook titles or convert a traditional printed book to a digital interactive eBook, they often miss the added value this new medium can provide. It’s important to understand the distinction between apps and eBooks, as it's something that often confuses both publishers and consumers. It basically comes down to formats; apps are mostly native iOS or Android software, whereas eBooks are documents of a particular format, such as the open standards EPUB and Mobipocket (.mobi).
