For 70 years we've experimented, innovated, and produced a legacy of technical and creative firsts in cinema, animation, and documentary. Think McLaren, Lipsett, Brittain, and Jutra; Stereoscopic 3d, VTR, and participatory media. Today, the way we create, consume, and connect with each other changes by the minute. And this evolving collection of stories reflects that reality. It's the result of artists and storytellers of all sorts utilizing new technology, to explore new forms of creation, for a new kind of Canada. The stories they're telling here are new, but share a lot in common with the work that came before: they present distinct voices, strong points-of-view, and unique perspectives. Hannes Nützmann / Gelsomina. For the Ars Electronica festival in 2007 Hanna and Magdalena created Gelsomina, the Voice Knitting Machine: an installation based on an old mechanical knitting machine of the 1970s, that was hacked to become interactive, using voice signals. Therefore they used a microcontroller and 24 small servo motors in order to imitate a pattern card that could be directly controlled by live user input which was processed via a connected computer. For the Industrious|Artefacts exhibition at the Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen, Netherlands, the software was completey rewritten, including audio analysis and servo controller. The project presents perspectives on a fictional future for the United Kingdom. It sees England devolved into four self-contained counties, each free to experiment with governance, economy and lifestyle. These 'live laboratories' interrogate the cultural and ethical impact of existing and new technologies and how they alter the way we live. Digitarians depend on digital technology and all its implicit totalitarianism: tagging, metrics, total surveillance, tracking, data logging and 100% transparency. Their society is organised entirely by market forces; citizen and consumer are the same.
