GitHub101 – ProfHacker - Blogs - The Chronicle of Higher Education

Up until this posting I have talked about some of the great features of working with repositories of text in GitHub and the ways in which it facilitates collaboration even without direct collaboration. It is, in its own motto, a "social coding" environment that allows anyone to "fork" code, issue "pull requests" to propose improvements on someone else’s work, as … Over the past few weeks I have been taking a closer look at how to use the text hosting and version control service at GitHub: part 1, part 2, part 3, and part 4. This post continues a series here at ProfHacker on GitHub.

The series began with the suggestion that this service, primarily used to host code repositories and facilitate collaboration between programmers, is also home to many innovations that offer powerful ways forward across the realm of academic scholarship. With Pandoc as your digital typesetting tool, you can use Markdown syntax to add figures, a bibliography, formatting, and easily change citation styles from Chicago to MLA (for instance), all using plain text. The tutorial assumes no prior technical knowledge, but it scales with experience, as we often suggest more advanced techniques towards the end of each section. Tutorial: Learn Git with Bitbucket Cloud. Open source dashboard tools for visualizing data. To start with a confession, I like dashboards.

Open source dashboard tools for visualizing data

A lot. I've always been fascinated by finding new and interesting ways to bring meaning to data with interactive visualization tools. While I'm definitely a geek for numbers, the human mind is simply much better at interpreting trends visually than it is just picking them out a spreadsheet. And even when your main interest in a dataset is the raw numbers themselves, a dashboard can help to bring meaning by highlighting which values matter most, and what the context of those numbers is.

Figuring out how to best visualize your data can be challenging. Kdchang/frontend-starter-kit: Just a light-weight front-end development boilerplate. (NodeJS/NPM/ES6/Bower/Gulp/Sass/Babel/Babelify/Browserify) Pandas Tutorial: Data analysis with Python: Part 1. Python is a great language for doing data analysis, primarily because of the fantastic ecosystem of data-centric Python packages.

Pandas Tutorial: Data analysis with Python: Part 1

Pandas is one of those packages, and makes importing and analyzing data much easier. Pandas builds on packages like NumPy and matplotlib to give you a single, convenient, place to do most of your data analysis and visualization work. In this introduction, we’ll use Pandas to analyze data on video game reviews from IGN, a popular video game review site. The data was scraped by Eric Grinstein, and can be found here. As we analyze the video game reviews, we’ll learn key Pandas concepts like indexing. What is ChatOps? Have you been told that your company is moving to a more DevOps development culture, but you have no idea what that really means?

What is ChatOps?

Hubot and ChatOps are tools that can help you understand more about DevOps and learn to use it in your organization. I'll summarize some clear steps and initiatives to do that. What is DevOps? First, let's define what I mean by DevOps. It can mean a lot of things depending on perspective, but what I call it is the process of getting multiple teams who are involved in the software process to talk to each other. This is one of the reasons why GitHub is so valuable for software projects and teams today; it allows people to collaborate instead of just throwing something over the wall to another team. How do you break down the walls? What is ChatOps? Next up, is the idea of ChatOps. "By placing the tools directly in the middle of conversation, everyone is pairing on code all of the time.
