Humans Changing Saltiness of the Seas. Function of the Neuromuscular Junction. A neuromuscular junction (NMJ) is the synapse or junction of the axon terminal of a motoneuron with the motor end plate, the highly-excitable region of muscle fiber plasma membrane responsible for initiation of action potentials across the muscle's surface, ultimately causing the muscle to contract.

Function of the Neuromuscular Junction

In vertebrates, the signal passes through the neuromuscular junction via the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Anatomy When a motor neuron enters a muscle, it loses its myelin sheath and splits into many terminal branches. Motor neuron (efferent) axons originating in the spinal cord enter muscle fibers, where they split into many unmyelinated branches. Research raises doubts about whether modern humans and Neanderthals interbred. New research raises questions about the theory that modern humans and Neanderthals at some point interbred, known as hybridisation.

Research raises doubts about whether modern humans and Neanderthals interbred

The findings of a study by researchers at the University of Cambridge suggest that common ancestry, not hybridisation, better explains the average 1-4 per cent DNA that those of European and Asian descent (Eurasians) share with Neanderthals. The study was published Aug. 13 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. In the last two years, a number of studies have suggested that modern humans and Neanderthals had at some point interbred.

Genetic evidence shows that on average Eurasians and Neanderthals share between 1-4 per cent of their DNA. In contrast, Africans have almost none of the Neanderthal genome. However, a new study funded by the BBSRC and the Leverhulme Trust has provided an alternative explanation for the genetic similarities. Then, about 350-300 thousand years ago, the European range and the African range became separated. Scientists complete Bonobo genome. In a project led by the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, an international team of scientists has completed the sequencing and analysis of the genome of the last great ape, the bonobo.

Scientists complete Bonobo genome

Bonobos, which together with chimpanzees are the closest living relatives of humans, are known for their peaceful, playful and sexual behaviour that contrasts with the more aggressive behaviour of chimpanzees. The genome sequence provides insights into the evolutionary relationships between the great apes and may help us to understand the genetic basis of these traits. The genome was sequenced from Ulindi, a female bonobo who lives in the Leipzig zoo. Genome sequences have also been generated from all other great apes – chimpanzee, orang-utan and gorilla - making this the final genome of a great ape to be sequenced and providing insights into their relationships with one another and with humans.
