Edward Gorey’s Never-Before-Seen Letters and Illustrated Envelopes. By Maria Popova What a housefly has to do with Tim Burton and everything that makes snail mail great. It’s no secret I’m an enormous fan of Edward Gorey’s, mid-century illustrator of the macabre, whose work influenced generations of creators, from Nine Inch Nails to Tim Burton. Between September 1968 and October 1969, Gorey set out to collaborate on three children’s books with author and editor Peter F. Neumeyer and, over the course of this 13-month period, the two exchanged a series of letters on topics that soon expanded well beyond the three books and into everything from metaphysics to pancake recipes. Today, Neumeyer is opening the treasure trove of this fascinating, never-before-published correspondence in Floating Worlds: The Letters of Edward Gorey and Peter F.
In light of his body of work, and because of the interest that his private person has aroused, I feel strongly that these letters should not be lost to posterity. GIMP tiene muchas capacidades, puede ser utilizado como programa de dibujo, retoque fotográfico, procesamiento de imágenes en lote y convertidor de formato de imagen. GIMP es expandible y extensible. Roberto Innocenti es uno de los ilustradores mundiales más reconocidos y con obra estudiada por especialistas, curiosamente la mayoría norteamericanos. Mi revista Peonza pudo entrevistarle el pasado otoño en Alicante y este otoño –en el próximo nº 98 de octubre- saldrá una larga charla que tuvo con mi compañero Javier Sobrino, escritor y amigo. Como transcriptor y traductor grupal de sus palabras me permito ofrecer un largo extracto de lo que nos contó. ¿Cómo fue su acercamiento al mundo de la plástica, del dibujo, del arte? ¿Qué le motivó para dedicarse a la ilustración de libros? Al inicio yo era un niño y lo vivía todo como un juego. Depende. Es un proceso arbitrario. Yo no pienso en el público. James Jean: La imaginación perversa. Yo soy de esas enamoradas de James Jean, este señor sorprendente que tiene esa capacidad de hacer todo increíble. A él lo conocí hace unos años por sus libretas de bocetos, fue su moleskine la primera que me inspiro a tener cuadernos de dibujos y retratar gente en los medios de transporte (por ahí tiene un boceto de un tren que va mas allá de la gracia).
Hoy lo comparto con ustedes por que por casualidad vi fotos de sus mas reciente exposición y recordé lo necesario que es compartir cosas de este tipo, cosas tan buenas y deliciosas de ver. Los invito entonces a que con mucho detenimiento se deleiten con las obras fantástico-turbias de James Jean, este artista producto de un suertudo choque Taiwanes-Americano, graduado de la New York City’s School of Visual Art, cuyo nombre romanizado solo recuerda al icono rockabilly cincuentero.

Kay Nielsen's Stunning 1914 Illustrations of Scandinavian Fairy Tales. By Maria Popova As a lover of illustrated fairy tales and having just returned from Sweden, I was delighted to discover, thanks to the relentlessly wonderful 50 Watts, East of the Sun and West of the Moon: Old Tales from the North (public library; public domain) — a collection of Scandinavian fairy tales, illustrated by Danish artist Kay Rasmus Nielsen (1886-1957), whose work you might recall from the all-time greatest illustrations of Brothers Grimm and the fantastic visual history of Arabian Nights.
Originally published in 1914, this magnificent tome of 15 stories was recently reissued by Calla Editions, the same Dover imprint that revived Harry Clarke’s magnificent illustrations for Edgar Allan Poe, and features 25 color illustrations, along with a slew of black-and-white ones, in Nielsen’s singular style of haunting whimsy. ↬ 50 Watts. Somewhere between Henry Holiday’s weird paintings for Lewis Carroll and Edward Gorey’s delightfully grim alphabet fall Harry Clarke‘s hauntingly beautiful and beautifully haunting 1919 illustrations for Edgar Allan Poe’s Tales of Mystery and Imagination — a collection of 29 of Poe’s tales of the magical and the macabre.
So lavish was the artwork that a copy of the “deluxe” Clarke-illustrated edition went for 5 guineas in 1919, or about $300 in today’s money. The book, an epic volume of 480 pages, was eventually reprinted by Calla Editions in 2008, and is now available for the much more reasonable $27, or free with a trip to your local public library. Origami de Animales por Marc Fichou. El artista Marc Fichou, ha creado unas impresionantes obras de Origami en forma de varios animales, los cuales se muestran con el fondo del mismo papel que utilizó para crearlas. Su intención, era crear piezas donde la imagen no pudiese ser separada de su referente, creando así un vínculo visual entre el pasado y el presente. Este concepto naturalmente fue el que lo llevó hacia Origami, debido al carácter reversible de su proceso de plegado: cada uno puede ser desplegado de nuevo a su posición inicial de dos dimensiones cuadradas, y de este modo conservar las marcas físicas de sus pliegues.
