Barriers to Entry - An FP Slide Show. The Promised Land - A Photo Essay By Amnon Gutman. In June 2002, at the height of the Second Intifada, the Israeli government began erecting a barrier separating Israel from the West Bank in an attempt to curtail the entry of Palestinian terrorists into the country. This fence, some 456 miles long, has significantly cut down on terrorist infiltration and suicide bombings within Israel, but at the cost of freedom of movement for many Palestinians who live in its shadow. The daily commute of Palestinians coming into Israel to find work has been cruelly disrupted by checkpoints. But with sky-high unemployment in the West Bank, there's nowhere else to find work. Determined to keep providing for their families, men risk danger and terrible conditions to find work illegally in Israel -- sleeping in river creeks, under bridges, on building sites, and under highways.

Those who are caught sneaking past the barrier are arrested; once it's determined that they pose no imminent threat, the men are sent back to their homes in the West Bank. Photography Tutorials. I want to get in to the habit of doing at least one time lapse each month. Since I have been using Premiere and had no idea how to do a time lapse using this program (like I did with Sony Vegas) I thought it would be a good exercise to see how it was done.

In the future I will do a video on how I created this video, but since I am high on paint fumes right now I will save that for another day. For an extra bonus, I tried to key out the green paint for a little bit of this test, but as the paint drys quickly so does it color so it didn’t work that well. Oh well. If you are into time lapse you must have checked the option of getting an Intervalometer. as you can see from the Canon and Nikon links an Intervalometer is not cheap. Not really expensive either, but definitely not cheap. So As usual I ask: what can you DIY about it? Some cameras already have the time lapse feature built in, and Canon photographers can turn to CHDK for adding a time lapse feature. But there is a third, cooler version if you are into electronics (which I know lots of site readers are not afraid of). Achim Sack – a super electronics engineer – has a project for building an intervalometer the size of a finger nail. There are three parts for this project: making a PCB, Soldering the PCB and loading the PIC (a small, cheap, stupid CPU) with software.

Creating the PCB The PCB schematics are available for personal use here along with a PCB making tutorial. Downloading the Software to the PIC You download a software to a PIC using a kit called PicKit3. Soldering Shooting Link Recap. Photography Equipment Rentals - Toehold | Travel & Photography. Yay! Canon EOS Beginners' FAQ III - Lenses. Canon EOS Beginners' FAQ III - Lenses. DSLR Tips Workshop: How to take portraits with blurred backgrounds. DSLR Tips Workshop: How to take portraits with blurred backgrounds Professional portraits often have a blurred background which really makes the subject stand out. It’s actually an easy effect to achieve with any DSLR and in this workshop I’ll show you how.

In the portrait below left, I’ve used the camera’s automatic settings and both the person and the background are in sharp focus. In the photo below right though, I’ve adjusted the camera’s ‘aperture’ setting which has ensured only the person in the foreground is sharp, while the background is blurred. In my video tutorial below, I’ll explain how to achieve this effect, and at the bottom of the page you’ll find a reminder of the steps you’ll need to take. Checklist: How to take portraits with blurred backgrounds 1: Switch your camera to Aperture Priority mode by turning the mode dial to ‘A’ or on Canon models, ‘Av’. 2: Stand back a little and zoom-in your lens – this will accentuate the effect.

Equipment tip. Photographic Composition | What is composition? Position your subject at the intersection of those lines and it will be placed one third of the way from the sides, both top and bottom. This is illustrated in the image above of an old abandoned windmill in France. Some cameras have a means whereby you can actually see a grid in your viewfinder which will help you position your subject. If not, you can easily find it with a bit of practice. Another way to apply the Rule of Thirds is by cropping the picture afterwards. The shot below was the original shot I took of the windmill but with a wider view of the scene.

Here is the shot again (below) after being cropped but without the grid lines. Note that when cropping it helps to keep the dimensions in the same ratio as the original otherwise you end up with a series of photographs of odd sizes which tends to look a bit amateurish. The last shot below is of a second windmill which I took after moving around the field a bit. Top of Page. Recommended Canon lenses for Portrait, Wedding and Low Light photography. Recommended Canon lenses for portrait, wedding and low-light photography The classic portrait shot places a flattering view of the subject against a blurred background. This is very easy to achieve with the right lens and all the models below will do the trick. The key behind a blurred background is having a lens with a large aperture, indicated by a small f-number. The best portrait lenses have an f-number of 2.8 or smaller, and the lower this figure, the more blurred you can make your background.

Lenses with smaller f-numbers also gather more light which makes them ideal for taking photos in dim conditions without resorting to flashes or increasing the camera’s ISO sensitivity. See my Portrait Tutorial for more details. The flattering view is achieved with a lens sporting a slightly magnified view, which typically means having an equivalent focal length of between 70 and 135mm. Note when I mention full-frame bodies I'm referring to models like the EOS 5D Mark III and 6D. Canon EF-S 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS lens review: coverage and stabilisation. Canon EF-S 18-135mm IS coverage and stabilisation Canon's EF-S 18-135mm IS is designed as a general-purpose lens for cropped-frame bodies delivering equivalent coverage of 29-216mm.

To illustrate this range in practice we fitted the lens to an EOS 7D body, mounted it on a tripod and shot the same scene fully zoomed-out, then fully zoomed-in. Zoomed-out, the EF-S 18-135mm IS delivers fairly standard wide-angle coverage that's equivalent to 29mm. This matches the capabilities of the basic EF-S 18-55mm IS kit lens, so if you're upgrading from that model, you won't be enjoying anything wider.

Likewise if you were considering upgrading to the EF-S 18-200mm IS. For wider coverage in a general-purpose zoom, you'll need to go for the EF-S 15-85mm IS USM, or its predecessor, the EF-S 17-85mm IS USM. Where the EF-S 18-135mm IS really scores though is when zoomed-in, where, in Canon's general-purpose range, it's only out-gunned by the EF-S 18-200mm IS super-zoom. How To Create Time Lapse Movies With Lots Of Open Source Software. Time Lapse movies are really cool. Really. I got a nice shot of creating a time lapse movie when I moved to a new place. Here is how I did it.

WARNING: This is going to be a geeky post with lots of software downloads, hacks, and tweaks. WARNING 2: Once you time-lapse, you can never go back (only fast forward). UPDATE: the G10 has a CHDK build here. Get a Canon Point & Shoot (Like the excellent Canon G10) that works with CHDK (or get an intervalometer (either dedicated or general) for whatever camera you want); If you don’t use Canon/CHDK just skip the boring tech loaded section about loading your Canon with a new firmware. Location One of the nice things about a time lapse video is the contrast between static moving objects. Try to select a spot (and framing) that will show some static objects and some moving ones.

Of course all the “regular compositional rules” still apply here, so framing, thirds, foreground and background all play a part. Size and Intervals Mount your camera 1. 2. 3. Visual Weight and Room Size - How visual weight affects how small your room appears. Have you ever encountered two pieces of furniture that are approximately the same size but one seems heavier that the other? In fact, one seemed to take up more space than the other. I am not talking about actual weight or size. I am talking about visual weight - heaviness and size perceived by the eye and sent to the brain as truth. And your eye can fooled with color!

Dark vs. Light. By keeping visual weight in mind, you can fool the eye into thinking rooms are bigger or smaller and more or less crowded - a good thing to keep in mind when you have to come up with a design for an 8 foot by 8 foot room!
