PME29Vol2Chapman.pdf. Primary Problem Solving Poster. In our district, we use a problem solving process called Understand, Plan, Do, Check. We call it UPDC for short. It's based on the work of George Polya. We have a district poster describing the process, but we've been wanting one more appropriate for our primary classrooms. I asked my 1st grade teachers for suggestions on the wording, and this is the poster I made based on their suggestions. What do you think? UPDATE: Had to make the intermediate one a little more kid-friendly, too!

Are you looking for posters showing the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice? Spotlight on Math: Strategies for Addressing the Most Challenging Math Standards - Measurement. Mark W. Ellis Data collected from over 750,000 students using i-Ready® Diagnostic & Instruction [CM2] show that measurement is one of the most challenging math domains for students. According to the authors of Mathematics Learning in Early Childhood, measurement is difficult because it involves three skills: Identifying what is to be measuredChoosing a unit of measureDetermining the number of units Six New Concepts for Students In order to perform these actions proficiently and meaningfully, students must understand six new concepts: Progression As Amy MacDonald and Tim Lowrie explain in Developing Measurement Concepts within Context students’ proficiency with linear measurement typically follows a, “Progression from identification of the attribute and use of informal measurement through to the use of formal units, with application to contexts being the final stage.”

We see this progression in the Common Core Standards for mathematics: Building the Foundation for Later Grades Resource: Common Core Redoes the Math. Published Online: November 10, 2014 Published in Print: November 12, 2014, as Common Core Redoes the Math New standards bring hard questions, daunting instructional adjustments After a long and frustrating homework session with his 2nd grade son one day last school year, Jeff Severt dashed off a letter to the teacher. "I have a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering. ... Even I cannot explain the common-core mathematics approach, nor get the answer correct. " A word problem about a fictional student named Jack had put Mr. Mr. —Image From Facebook Reactions to the problem ranged from angry aspersions cast at the federal government (the supposed purveyors of the Common Core State Standards) to strong defenses of the teacher and the task.

The response from the lead writers of the common standards for math was perhaps the most interesting: The problem wasn't part of the common core, said mathematicians William G. Technology-Supported Math Instruction for Students with Disabilities: Two Decades of Research and Development. By: Ted S. Hasselbring, Alan C. Lott, and Janet M. Zydney (2006) Introduction Most people would agree that a major goal of schooling should be the development of students’ understanding of basic mathematical concepts and procedures. According to the NAEP, the majority of elementary and middle school students are not proficient in math. In this paper, we have adopted the term “math difficulty” to include terms frequently used to identify students who have difficulty with mathematics. Back to top Mathematical knowledge and learning To better understand how to enhance mathematical thinking and learning in today's students, especially students with math difficulty, we must first understand the nature of mathematical knowledge.

Declarative knowledge can be considered factual knowledge about mathematics. Procedural knowledge can be defined as the rules, algorithms, or procedures used to solve mathematical tasks. Building computational fluency Normal development of fluent math facts. Blendspace & Math in a 1:1 Classroom. I observed an above the line math lesson with Ms.

F, 5th grade teacher, this morning. I WISH every student in the world could experience this learning environment. Engagement was 100%, technology was being used to ENHANCE the learning, and the teacher was acting as a facilitator or a coach guiding students through the learning. I walked in the room with students working quietly at their tables, eying up and down between the laptop screen and a dry erase board or spiral notebook. During the observation I noticed the following resources in use: Envision Math Quizes, Keynote, Photo Booth, iMovie, Khan Academy, IXL, and Blendspace. Blendspace is a website where the teacher posts all his/her resources into one place with directions included as they move about at their own pace. There were 15 activities included in the Blendspace.

Another activity within the Blendspace was for students to record themselves in iMovie walking through a problem with variables. 11 Virtual Tools for the Math Classroom. More and more classrooms are gaining access to technology that can be used with students. Whether you're modeling a lesson, creating stations, or working in a one-to-one classroom, virtual tools can promote student engagement while increasing academic success. Here are some apps for iPads -- along with a few other tips -- that can transform your daily lessons and are definitely worth checking out! Base Ten Blocks Number Pieces is a great free app that allows every student with an iPad to have an endless number of base ten blocks at their fingertips. Whether they are learning basic place value, modeling how to add decimals, or exploring expanded notation, this app is worth looking into.

Children can write all over the iPad screen and demonstrate their thought process as they manipulate the virtual base ten blocks. Protractor Even on an iPad, a protractor can be used as a tool to measure angles. Graph Paper Geometry Pad lets children draw lines and shapes on graph paper. Geoboard Ruler Clock. 36 Math Apps For Elementary School Students From edshelf - By edshelf: Reviews & recommendations of tools for education As more classrooms adopt mobile devices such as iPads, teachers and technology integrators are faced with the question: “What apps do I install?” That is quite a hefty question too.

There are over 90,000 iOS apps in the Education category of the App Store. Since apps that teachers can use fall into other categories too, the number of choices is well above 100,000. Does your head hurt yet? Fortunately, there are intrepid technology enthusiasts – like Chris Beyerle – who actively curate collections of apps. Differentiated math instruction using Front Row: adaptive math for K-8 classrooms! I have started using a FREE new math program this spring called Front Row.

I’m really excited to start using this resource to teach math - I have heard amazing things about it how engaging it is for students and how it has the potential to really help them grow in math. I’ve also played around with the dashboard, and I can’t wait to use it to tailor math instruction in my class! - Be sure to scroll down and sign up today - I have a limited number of free teacher sign ups to give and unlock all the features! In particular, here’s why I’m most excited: Front Row is adaptiveEvery student works at their own pace, so no student is in over their head, and no student is bored.

This is a huge deal - the fact Front Row can just do this automatically without any intervention from me frees up so much of my time to help my students individually and in small groups. Fun Fact: That’s the Capital of Texas Highway, which takes you right to my house! Every time I try to sit down and compose a blog post about last week’s Apple Distinguished Educator Global Institute… I can’t.

It’s not that I don’t want to! I *literally* can’t type the words. Even with every letter in the alphabet and every word in the dictionary, anything I attempt to share here will fall short. How can I convey here the feeling I had when I walked into the first general session, realizing that nearly 400 educators with hearts like mine from nearly 40 countries were gathered there? When I saw the back of the ballroom, and all of the telephone-booth-like contraptions all lined up, filled with global translators so that *every* educator could be a part of the conversations happening in that room, I was literally overcome with a wave of emotions. Through workshops facilitated by ADEs and Apple staff, we learned so much from the best of the best at Apple. The Lobby Piano Concert Crew.

Marvelous Math Books for Kids. Ok, so here's the issue in our house -- we've got one child who is a math whiz and another who wouldn't mind if math was wiped off the face of the earth. The one thing they both have in common is neither enjoys any math homework: "It's boring, Mom! " "Yes, I know. Worksheets aren't always the best way to enjoy math. " But you still need to do your homework. This is how it goes for so many things in life, right. So since math is important in life, I try to introduce them to non-school, non-worksheet ways to gain a better understanding of math concepts. Luckily, both of my kids adore books. This week's Discover & Explore linky topic is Math so I thought it was the perfect time to share some of our best loved math stories.

And as you read along, challenge the kids to solve the problems before they turn the page -- Learning the identify numbers and then counting items are the earliest introduction to math for most kids.
