The-World-of-Higher-Education.jpg (800×4962) Graduate Employment Around the World. Low working hours per annum does not necessarily equate to a better lifestyle.

Graduate Employment Around the World

Several factors weigh heavy on this statistic, such as the number of people in part-time work, or a lower number of people paying social security contributions. What's more, a system that offers lower working hours as standard per year does not favour those on minimum wage. Regardless of these issues, there are some incredible comparative statistics; Germany's average employee works nearly half as many hours each year as their Mexican counterparts (1,388 vs 2,237). France is a distant second in low working hours (1,489), while Koreans rack up an average of 2,163 hours a year. The percentage of working adults employed in a given country is as good a barometer as any when it comes to assessing one's chances of getting a solid, steady job in a chosen nation. Many people expect minimum wage to be a right and not a privilege, but that's simply not the case.

How Nations Fare in PhDs by Sex. In the U.S., women are going to college and majoring in science and engineering fields in increasing numbers, yet here and around the world they remain underrepresented in the workforce.

How Nations Fare in PhDs by Sex

Comparative figures are hard to come by, but a disparity shows up in the number of Ph.D.s awarded to women and men. The chart here, assembled from data collected by the National Science Foundation, traces the gender gap at the doctoral level for 56 nations. The situation in individual countries varies widely, but as the numbers make clear, there are interesting exceptions to the global trend.
