Millionaires and local activists have joined forces across Britain to fight proposals for scores of huge incinerators that have ignited a new planning row with the Government. The building of energy from waste (EfW) plants, some capable of burning up to 90 lorry loads of rubbish a day, has set councils against each other and drawn ministers into parish conflicts. Parents and pressure groups have allied themselves to, among others, a pop star and television presenter in the fight against the incinerators, which are designed to reduce the need for landfill but have been criticised for their “devastating” presence in local environments. http://www.timesplus.co.uk/tto/news/?login=false&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thetimes.co.uk%2Ftto%2Ftravel%2Fnews%2F

Three years ago we published our ‘Manifesto for Slow Travel’ in hidden europe . It has since been picked up more widely, online as well as in other print media. hidden europe magazine is very much about slow travel, about deceleration rather than speed. The key to slow travel is a state of mind — and that can be developed anywhere, even at home. We make here the full text of our manifesto available online. Over the last few hundred years there has been a subtle shift in how we think about travel.

1. Small 'n' central: Teatropace 33 Navigate down a narrow street past rows of small furniture makers and duck into the Teatropace 33 , where the first thing that hits you is the massive 17th-century spiral stone staircase in this former cardinal's house. Wood and stone floors combine with enormously high, beamed ceilings to give a solid, comfortable feel in the double rooms, while the top floor suite has its own private roof terrace.

Patrick's Roadhouse isn't well-known to the general public, but it has been a personal favorite of the stars for years. Located in a bright green shack just above Pacific Coast Highway, on the route to Malibu , it sits near the border of Santa Monica and Pacific Palisades. Patrick's is somewhat eccentric, somewhat rough around the edges, with mediocre food and zero decor - not really the kind of place you'd expect to find a superstar like Arnold Schwarzenegger , but there he is, with a permanent table close to the door (in the main dining room, just past the counter. Look for his Humvee parked outside...) But you will often find him here in the a.m., along with plenty of his Hollywood friends.
