The Documentary Revolution – A Shift To ‘Truthful Cinema’? As early as 1900 films were being made in order to document the cultures, rituals and traditions of people around the world. These can be considered pioneering documentaries, as although at times they may seem old fashioned and even politically incorrect, there is a lot to be learnt from their approaches. Nanook of the North Considered a forefather of documentary filmmaking, Robert Flaherty’s ‘Nanook of the North’ was first shown to audiences in 1922.
Although silent, ‘Nanook of the North’ tells the story of an Inuit family living in the arctic, following them on their search for food and trading posts, building shelters, and their constant plight for survival in a tremendously harsh environment. Flaherty set out with the aim to understand the people living in the Canadian arctic for the railway authorities, and is now considered a pioneer of documentary filmmaking. But it isn’t all fame and glory, as there have also been multiple controversies surrounding this film. Chronicle of a summer.
Has a libertarian society ever existed? - The Libertarian Republic. By Ian Huyett It’s sometimes suggested that libertarian ideas are hazardous because they lack precedent. Functioning decentralized societies, it’s implied, are absent from humanity’s past. Yet throughout recorded history, nations have survived and thrived without the overarching authority that President Obama assures us is necessary for prosperity. My observation is nothing new. Icelandic Godord Perhaps the most familiar example of a historic libertarian order, the godord system of old Iceland has been cited by economist David Friedman and other libertarian thinkers as an example of a decentralized legal system. It’s not a coincidence that many advocates of liberty see a paradise amidst the pages of Iceland’s sagas. The creation of Iceland was, first and foremost, a flight from overarching government. Because Icelanders rejected kingship, men who wished to become godar – religious and political leaders – had to persuade others to follow them voluntarily.
The Hoplite-Farmer Related. The Refracted Light: Imaginary and Impossible Colors. STARE AT THE TOP square for a minute or more. Do not move your head, and keep your eyes right in the middle of the square. Slowly move your eyes to the square below. Glorious, isn't it? You are seeing some colors that are impossible to actually portray in the real world, other than transiently as you see here. These are called “imaginary colors”. You can't make paint that shows those colors, nor can you project a color of that light on a screen, nor show it on a computer monitor. Here is the problem.
There are some deep, rich red colors which do not stimulate either your green or blue cone cells. A camera mimics human vision by also having three classes of sensors, and like the eye, there is no color which will give a signal in the camera's green which will not also give a signal in either red or blue or both. RAW Photo Processor was set with UniWB and no color space assigned, which gives basically the actual signal received by the pixels. Image originally from Wikipedia. It’s a question I often ask myself and to be honest I don’t have a great answer for it yet. One key discovery I’ve made over the past year or so is that I need to have great habits in place. That’s why I’m working on a solid running routine and on a set wake-up time and sleep time. One other realization I had is that, as I now spend so much of my day working online, there are a heap of new apps being created all the time to help us all become more productive. That’s why I thought of compiling a full list of 100 tools, tips and tricks for you to reflect a bit on your own productivity. Of course, a sure fire way to fail might be to try and use all 100, which Joel pointed out to me when we discussed this post!

Bringing Back Wonder Woman. Dear privileged Hollywood women, We need you. It’s time. You can no longer remain silent. You must act. You must step up. White men alone cannot decide the fate of the Wonder Woman movie. As I write this, I understand the sad truth that many people (ie too many of our young) today do not know Wonder Woman: her power, strength, ideals or her significance to women’s empowerment and history. In 1941, a psychologist named William Moulton Marston began writing comic books under a pseudonym. Along with this obsession for the truth, Marston loved Greek mythology and believed in women’s overall higher moral compass.
“The next one hundred years will see the beginning of an American matriarchy–a nation of Amazons in the psychological rather than physical sense,” adding that, “women would take over the rule of the country, politically and economically.” Marston, a complicated man, was very much interested in bondage and the relationship between dominance and submission. I’m sorry, I got excited. DIY Special Effects: The 'Matrix' Bullet Time Shot with a Ceiling Fan and a GoPro. #ACCELERATE MANIFESTO for an Accelerationist Politics. Yeshasvini[edit] References[edit] Turning orgasm into art. The black-and-white video begins with a woman sitting at a table with a book in front of her. She looks into the camera and states her name, the name of the book, and begins to read. It seems she’s overwhelmed by the words — there’s a slight twitch, a smirk, a straightening of the back, a desperate breath in — and she struggles to continue reading. Eventually you realize there is more to this scene than it at first seems — maybe when you notice the ever-so-slight buzzing sound in the background, or maybe not until the moans begin. Either way, before the end of the video there is the unmistakable appearance of an orgasm. This is the setup of art photographer Clayton Cubitt’s new video series, “Hysterical Literature.” I talked to Cubitt, also known as Siege, by email about his fascinating new project, the line between high and low art, and authentic portraiture in the age of self-branding.

College of Production - CoP Show: Future Fiction. Riot grrrl: searching for music's young female revolutionaries. March 1993, and a storm is about to hit. Two bands – one American, one British – have embarked on a tour of the UK, sweeping across the country with a message and a mission. Bikini Kill and Huggy Bear proclaim in words, deeds and noise that it is no longer OK for men to push women to the back of the room with actual and threatened violence, nor are women just there to hold the guys' coats while they mosh. The new ethos is screamed loud and clear: girls can have the stage, and they can run the show.
I was one of the many participants in this revolution as a writer, fan and gig promoter, following the bands on several dates and putting on their show in Leeds. To be a girl in 1990s America meant being fed on media lies that to be acceptable you must be impossibly thin and as pretty as a photoshopped picture. In 1991, a handful of girls from the small city of Olympia, Washington, decided that things were going to change, and no way would they be shutting up any time soon. . • Karren Ablaze! ' This Mexico City Building Eats Smog for Lunch. There are plenty of architects these days who are doing their best to design buildings that are energy efficient and utilize green technology. And then there’s Allison Dring and Daniel Schwaag of the Berlin-based firm Elegant Embellishments. For Torre de Especialidades, a hospital with a new tower currently under construction in Mexico City, the duo has developed a tile called proSolve370e, which will cover the façade of the building.
The tile’s shape and chemical coating will help neutralize the chemicals present in the city’s smog. Yes, that’s right, this building will literally eat pollution. Dring tells TakePart that Elegant Embellishments was formed in 2006 as a kind of architectural start-up to self-initiate projects that incorporate new and often invisible technologies. She adds that, “A common thread in our work is the visual articulation of technologies that have the potential to alleviate the ecological impact of cities but often require a reexamination of current practices. Comfort women. Comfort women were women and girls forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II.[1][2] The name "comfort women" is a translation of a Japanese name ianfu (慰安婦).[3][4] Ianfu is a euphemism for shōfu (娼婦) whose meaning is "prostitute(s)".[5] Estimates vary as to how many women were involved, with numbers ranging from as low as 20,000[6] to as high as 200,000,[7][8] or even as many as 360,000 to 410,000[9] but the exact numbers are still being researched and debated.[10] Many of the women were from occupied countries, including Korea, China, and the Philippines,[11] although women from Burma, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan, Indonesia and other Japanese-occupied territories were used for military "comfort stations".
According to testimony, young women from countries under Japanese Imperial control were abducted from their homes. In many cases, women were also lured with promises of work in factories or restaurants. Japanese military prostitution Outline. America's serious crime rate is plunging, but why? | World news. On one of the lifeless, uniform streets of America's capital, a bulky former crack cocaine dealer who goes by the nom de guerre of Tiny laments the passing of the old Washington DC. Made a lot of money too," he says, hovering on a corner in the mostly black Trinidad neighbourhood a few blocks north of that largely white citadel, the Capitol. "Even sold it down by the White House. Tiny long ago moved on to the more legal if less lucrative, and certainly less adrenaline-pumping, enterprise of parcel delivery, which is why he is reluctant to give a name other than the one he used to be known by on the streets. Two decades ago, Washington DC had the highest murder rate in America. The latest FBI figures show that murder, rape, robberies and other serious crimes have fallen to a 48-year low across the country. Vývařovna.
Carolyn Gudger. Central dispatch received a call reporting a gunman in the school at 9:15 a.m. Save a student or two who were arriving late, and school principal Melanie Riden, the front entranceway and hall were relatively empty. According to Dr. Jubal Yennie, Sullivan County director of schools, entrances are locked at that time, and it's unclear how Cowan made entry. Sheriff Wayne Anderson said Cowan was "irate," and immediately pointed a .380-caliber, semi-automatic handgun at Riden's head.
A receptionist in an adjacent office saw the confrontation, according to sheriff's officials, and immediately alerted students and staff of a lockdown. At that point, Sheriff Anderson says, School Resource Officer Carolyn Gudger entered the lobby and drew her gun. Gudger pushed Riden behind her and toward the nearby cafeteria, allowing her to escape to safety. "There's no doubt that Carolyn Gudger probably saved (Riden's) life at that point," Anderson says.
