OLAF Unit 1. The Flipped Classroom Model: A Full Picture. Due to Khan Academy’s popularity, the idea of the flipped classroom has gained press and credibility within education circles. Briefly, the Flipped Classroom as described by Jonathan Martin is: Flip your instruction so that students watch and listen to your lectures… for homework, and then use your precious class-time for what previously, often, was done in homework: tackling difficult problems, working in groups, researching, collaborating, crafting and creating. Classrooms become laboratories or studios, and yet content delivery is preserved. How To Flip An Entire School. I’m the Principal at Clintondale High School – a financially disadvantaged high school located outside of Detroit. Our school has been in debt for the past decade, and during the recession our area suffered immensely. 74 percent of our 570 students qualify for the free or reduced lunch program, 38 percent receive special education services and 70 percent are a racial minority. Like many schools around the country, our students were not doing well in class, and many were failing – two years ago our failure rate was 61 percent. We decided that a change had to be made in order to put our students in a position to succeed in high school and beyond. How We Started The first thing we did was examine our teaching model. To begin this process, we examined forty of our teachers for one full year.
As seen in this research, our current education model leaves students to review and practice the information independently, without the help and support they need. Successes. OLAF Unit 3. Innosight's Michael Horn on How 'Blended Learning' and Technology Can Bridge the Education Gap - Arabic Knowledge@Wharton. Michael Horn sees the Internet providing access to a range of products and services that will help improve the way people can learn. While adult education is where on-line learning initially got its start, Horn predicts that half of high school courses in the U.S. will be taken online in less than a decade. Horn co-wrote the bestselling book Disrupting Class: How Disruptive Innovation Will Change the Way the World Learns with Harvard Professor Clayton Christensen.
He and Christensen later co-founded The Innosight Institute, a non-for profit think tank devoted to applying the theories of disruptive innovation to problems in the social sector. In the future, Horn predicts the majority of students will be engaged in what he calls "blended learning" where they'll learn online with control over the pace of their learning in schools with teachers providing guidance. An edited transcript of the conversation follows. Michael Horn: Absolutely. I'll give a U.S. Transforming schools with blended learning. Blended learning—which combines face-to-face classes with online courses—is quickly gaining ground in education.
In fact, some studies suggest that blended learning, also called hybrid learning, offers a better academic experience than pure brick-and-mortar classes or online-only courses. Whether students are out of school on extended absences, want to enroll in a higher-level course not offered in their local district, or need to recover academic credits, blended learning offers flexible solutions and different scenarios for students and teachers alike. With the generous support of Connections Learning, we’ve put together this list of stories from our archives, along with other relevant materials, to help you best determine how blended learning might meet the needs of your school or district.

Blended Learning is not so much an innovation as it is a natural by-product of the digital domain creeping into physical boundaries. As digital and social media become more and more prevalent in the life of learners, it was only a matter of time before learning became “blended” by necessity. That said, there’s a bit more to Blended and “Hybrid” Learning than throwing in a little digital learning. 6 Types of Blended Learning Face-to-face DriverRotationFlexOnline LabSelf-BlendOnline Driver The following infographic takes a different approach to the concept, labeling it “Disruptive,” and even offering an interesting matrix.

Student perspective: the benefits of blogging. Jenny Love, a PhD student at the UCL Energy Institute, explains how writing a blog complements her studies and boosts her employability. My first experience of blogging was at the Cheltenham Science Festival, which I wrote about for the UCL Events blog.
Although several people had suggested that I start my own blog, it wasn’t until our departmental communications assistant asked me more formally that I actually did so. It’s quite a new thing and I’m trying to write one post per month, each time collaborating with a different person in the field of energy – normally from my department. For my PhD, I’m looking at the effects of home energy efficiency measures on the occupants. When houses have insulation, new heating systems and other energy-saving measures installed, they can end up using more energy afterwards than before. I’m trying to learn about why. I tend to blog about energy issues which relate to normal people’s lives.

Using Blogs to Integrate Technology in the Classroom As the Internet becomes an increasingly pervasive and persistent influence in people's lives, the phenomenon of the blog stands out as a fine example of the way in which the Web enables individual participation in the marketplace of ideas. Teachers have picked up on the creative use of this Internet technology and put the blog to work in the classroom. The education blog can be a powerful and effective technology tool for students and teachers alike.
What is a blog? A blog (sometimes referred to as a weblog) is a Web publishing tool that allows authors to quickly and easily self-publish text, artwork, links to other blogs or Web sites, and a whole array of other content. Blogs are set-up like conventional Web sites, with navigation links, and other standard Web site features. Blogs have one standard characteristic, however: the posting. Postings are often short and frequently updated. Blogs may be viewed publicly, as any other Web site. Benefits of Blogs in Education « blogging about blogging. This is the author-version of article published as: Duffy, Peter and Bruns, Axel (2006) The Use of Blogs, Wikis and RSS in Education: A Conversation of Possibilities. In Proceedings Online Learning and Teaching Conference 2006, pages pp. 31-38, Brisbane. Accessed from This article looks at three newer technologies: blogs, wikis and RSS feeds. For each, they explore what the technology is, its benefits to education and the uses of this technology in education.
I did find it interesting that this is the third article that groups blogs, wikis and RSS feeds together. RSS feeds is important part of both of these technologies as it allows the sites to come to the individual versus having to visit each site. With this particular articles description of how blogs are most beneficial (as an individual focused tool) the combination with wikis suggests the use of the two tolls to fit the different foci of the activity.

Posted by José Picardo on June 25, 2008 I have recently been looking into motivating pupils, boys in particular, to speak in the target language and I have been studying the use of Voki and my subject blog as the means to achieve this objective. Having laid out the rationale for the use of Web 2.0 for this purpose in a previous post, I would like to explain exactly what I did in these three lessons and how I planned them. I was very careful to introduce the idea of using Voki to my pupils so that they would be immediately engaged and enthused by the prospect of using it. I therefore decided to plan for serendipity and cheat slightly by making them think it was their idea to use Voki all along: I purposefully showed them a Voki during a lesson which had been recorded by my three year old son speaking in Spanish.
Lesson 1 Lesson 1 focused on revising the appropriate vocabulary and grammatical structures using an interactive whiteboard and introducing Voki to my pupils by: Lesson 2 Lesson 3. Activity – iPads in Education. iPad Tips for Teachers Using iBooks for Education. I’ve been spending a lot of time in iBooks recently, and have showed teachers a whole slew of features that are new, or not as well known, in Apple’s default e-reader. So, without further ado, here are a few of my favorites tips for teachers using iBooks in education. 1. Find Free Books There are probably more free book titles in the iBooks Store than you might think, and they can be a great way to add to your classroom library without taking up any more valuable shelf space! Want to know a quick way to find them? 2. A number of titles in the iBooks Store come with a built-in read aloud feature that will read the text to students, and highlight words as it does so. 3.
By now, you might have several shelves full of fine free books, but how do you quickly find the one that you want? 4. This might be a little obscure, but Apple recently teamed up with Flipboard to let you find new titles from the iBooks Store right from inside the Flipboard app. 5. 6. 7. 8. What’s Your Favorite Tip? I am very fortunate to be involved in this relaunch as a Voki Ambassador, one of a dozen or so educators around the world who are collaborating with Voki in New York to ensure a renewed focus on Education. So what can we expect? Voki allows teachers and students to create speaking avatars in a fun, stimulating and engaging way. Although some initially find tools such as Voki of little educational value, upon closer inspection, teachers quickly realise that Voki allows students to express themselves on the internet in safety and confidently, as their real identities are hidden behind the avatar. The new Voki for Education is being officially relaunched to better cater for teachers and students. Will Voki remain free? Yes, the idea is that Voki will always remain free. Voki. Posted by José Picardo on November 1, 2009 Technology is like electricity: it’s pervasive, it’s everywhere… it’s useful. We ignore it at our peril. We wouldn’t expect our pupils to read by candlelight or to write on wax tablets. Equally, we should be encouraging them to use the tools they have available, the tools with which they are familiar if we are to ensure they remain engaged and motivated. Xtranormal is a text-to-movie website which allows you and your students to create short films with your own scripts using very clever text-to speech technology.
This means your students write a script and then feed it into Xtranormal to produce films with characters enacting it. Setting the scene My pupils, 16 – 17 year olds, were first introduced to Xtranormal, a web application with which they were not familiar, in one of our new Digital Language Suites – two ICT suites with specialist language software.
