With the recent talk about the growing “billion-dollar club” in startups, I’ve been wondering, as a Series A investor, what characteristics a $1 billion consumer tech company has. I examined the pool of consumer companies that have had exits over $100 million within the current era of consumer tech, which I consider to be post-recession 2008. He and I wanted to share the conversation with you. For some time, the conventional wisdom in the VC industry has been that small funds have better performance profiles than large ones. Five key datacentre trends for 2013

IDC research director Donna Taylor told the Data Centre World conference in London that new technologies continue to refine, enhance, and complicate data centre design and operation. The technologies in particular include cloud, big data, solid state drives (SSDs), converged systems and automation. Cloud IDC is seeing increasing adoption of public, private and hybrid cloud across EMEA, said Taylor, adding that this was partly down to the fact that businesses were less worried about cloud security than they were in previous years. But cloud uptake across the EMEA region is still a long way behind the US, said Taylor. iRedMail - Free, Open Source Mail Server Solution for Linux/BSD. Google just launched Zopfli, a new open source compression algorithm that can compress web content about 3 to eight 8 more densely (PDF) than the standard zlib library.

Google Launches Zopfli To Compress Data More Densely And Make Web Pages Load Faster

Because Zopfli is compatible with the decompression algorithms that are already part of all modern web browsers, using Google’s new algorithm and library on a server could lead to faster data transmission speeds and lower web page latencies, which would ultimately make the web a little bit faster. The new algorithm, which Zurich-based Google engineer Lode Vandevenne created as a 20 percent project, is an implementation of the Deflate algorithms – the same algorithm that’s also used for the ZIP and gzip file formats and PNG image format. Zopfli’s output is compatible with zlib, but uses a different and more effective algorithm to compress data. There is, however, a price that needs to be paid for this: it takes significantly longer to compress files with Zopfli (decompression times are virtually the same, though).

11 Big Tech Trends You'll See in 2013

Time is a continuum, and the calendar is a human construct designed to help us keep organized. Things that will happen “next year” are already happening now, we may simply not take note of them until the sun rises and sets dozens and dozens of times. So as I look to 2013, I realize that much of which I expect to see in the coming 12-to-14 months has been quietly (or not so quietly) developing for months, even years. From my point of view, it’s unlikely 2013 will contain any revolutionary or ground-breaking advancements in technology, social media or even the nexus of the two. Believe me, I want breakthroughs.
