Email “All happiness depends on courage and work.” ―Honoré de Balzac “This morning my best friend, Karl, confided in me that he’s having trouble playing a depressed character in our school’s end of the semester play.
‘Call me one of the lucky ones,’ he said. ‘But I just have no emotional tie to the role, and I know it’s hurting the quality of the character I’m trying to portray.’ The kicker, Karl is one of the kids, just like me, who constantly gets picked on by the popular jocks at our school. Those are the opening lines to an email I received this morning from a reader named Darin. Helping other people succeed is your job, but it's also your job to focus on yourself, at least part of the time.
Why? Your success creates success for others--and success requires, at least in part, standing out from the crowd and being known for something. Of course there are different ways you can stand out. (Picture: daveynin, creative commons) I’ve recently recognized an amazing guiding principle that’s been key to improving my peace of mind. I’m going to share it with you in this article. This principle, if applied consistently in all areas of your life, will help you to live with an ever growing sense of peace, joy, and security. It’s amazing in its simplicity, as well as in how easy it can be applied in various situations.
It’s also amazing how it’s not more widely promoted as a general principle in life. The principle actually developed in my mind while driving in traffic. I realized at some point that I had more opportunities to move over into the faster lane when I had some space in front of me to accelerate before merging into the faster lane. I very quickly noticed something else when I started leaving that space open ahead of me: I felt better.
