Hummm, say what? [ TOEFL Writing Mentor ] Renshaw Internet School of English. Riverside Language Program. Study finds that students learn more from non-tenure-track instructors. A major new study has found that new students at Northwestern University learn more when their instructors are adjuncts than when they are tenure-track professors.

Study finds that students learn more from non-tenure-track instructors

The study -- released this morning by the National Bureau of Economic Research (abstract available here) -- found that the gains are greatest for the students with the weakest academic preparation. And the study found that the gains extended across a wide range of disciplines. The authors of the study suggest that by looking at measures of student learning, and not just course or program completion, their work may provide a significant advance in understanding the impact of non-tenure-track instructors. Many adjuncts will no doubt be pleased by the study's conclusions on their teaching ability.

But the study does not call for an end to the two-tiered system of academic employment between those on and off the tenure track. The authors acknowledge that Northwestern is not a typical college. These programs generally combine an eye for the talent teachers need, strong content knowledge preparation, and well-structured opportunities to practice the craft of teaching. These are the programs that aspiring teachers should apply to and that districts should recruit from. These are also the programs that the field of teacher education can learn from. ESOL instructors face many challenges in the classroom, some of which are common to educators in other programs of study.

One such challenge is to engage students with a mandated curriculum that some may find unresponsive to their needs and experiences, discouraging classroom interaction. Instructors often use technology as a tool to encourage students to participate more in class. A tool frequently selected by instructors is blogs. Instructors choose blogging in order to create opportunities for students to learn English through self-expression. Unfortunately, there are limitations to the functionality of blogging; these limitations impact adult ESOL students more than other student populations. Though blog design can effectively collect comments and stimulate discussion and debate, blogging style limits itself to moving on to the next posting and debate, with little follow-up to prior activity.
