to introduce three major innovations at the InnoTrans trade fair in Berlin

On this occasion, Alstom will introduce three major innovations: the very latest version of its Citadis tram, a predictive maintenance tool, and new versions of the Atlas range, its ERTMS solution. Alstom will thus reveal the very latest version of its Citadis tram. More comfortable, more spacious, more accessible than ever before, it has been designed to improve the passenger experience. The new Alstom tram will feature more options than previous versions, enabling it to be adapted in the best way to suit the unique requirements of individual towns and cities.

Another innovation to be revealed by Alstom at InnoTrans is a predictive maintenance tool developed to reduce lifecycle costs for its customers. S high-speed trains cross their 16th border on the new Paris-Barcelona high-speed line. With the opening on 15 December 2013 of the direct high-speed line linking Paris (France) and Barcelona (Spain), Alstom’s high-speed (HS)1 trains have now crossed their 16th border2.

Alstom is the only rail manufacturer to have built more than 1,100 HS cross-border trains, in service in 18 different countries. The TGV Duplex and AVE S100 trains that will travel on the Paris-Barcelona line have all been designed and produced by Alstom. The Duplex very high-speed train, with the highest transport capacity on the market, is operated by French national rail operator, SNCF.

The AVE-S100, a single deck VHS train, operated by Spanish national rail operator, Renfe, was delivered about 20 years ago. Nissan’s role in trains move - Hitachi Rail Project Newton Aycliffe. Hitachi Rail Europe is one of the most significant inward investors in County Durham.

The company is a total railway system supplier offering rolling stock, traction equipment, signalling, traffic management systems, and maintenance depots. Hitachi draws on many years of experience as a leading supplier of metro, commuter and high-speed trains such as the Shinkansen (bullet train) for the Japanese and international markets. The company is part of the Agility Trains consortium which has been awarded a £5.8BN contract to finance, design, manufacture, maintain and service the next generation of intercity carriages to improve the UK’s mainline rail services. Nearly 900 new carriages will be made in a factory currently under construction at Merchant Park, a site in Newton Aycliffe owned by Merchant Place Developments.

Modern Railways: News, Views and Analysis on Today's Railway

GBRf, the first freight operator contracted to regularly carry biomass between UK ports and power stations, believes rail is the only viable means of transport for the movement of this fuel. Submitting evidence to an inquiry into bio-energy by the Commons Select Committee for Energy and Climate Change, the company expressed the opinion that mode of transport is crucial to ensuring the sustainability of the biomass market. GBRf told the committee that a secure rail freight market is the only practical and sustainable solution to transporting biomass to power stations.

New rail technical strategy

What is this all about and why is it necessary? The Institution of Railway Signal Engineers (IRSE) recently hosted a Railway Engineers Forum (REF) meeting at which Clive Burrows from First Group and James Hardy from the Railway Safety and Standards Board gave a preview on the new strategy and how it will differ from previous attempts to influence the longer term future. The first strategy for rail in recent times was published in 2007 with a focus on delivering a sustainable railway, whatever that was meant to mean.

It tried to concentrate on a whole system approach with work needing to be done to enhance capacity, maintain safety levels, reduce carbon emissions and obtain a better customer experience, but above all to reduce cost.
