TOPICS: Ways to happiness. Santa Rosa Councilwoman Shares Passion for Happiness Initiative | BohoBlog. After Julie Combs successfully campaigned for Santa Rosa City Council last year, she discovered that several issues central to her campaign were important to more than just Santa Rosa residents. In fact, several tied in directly with the nine elements that make up the Happiness Index.
“Elements of it meshed so well with things that I ran on,” she says, despite learning of the GHI after she took office. It’s so important to her now that she has made it one of her priority issues. It’s not that she is pushing for citywide implementation of the Happiness Initiative, which is a real thing, by the way.
But so many of parts of the initiative can and should be implemented in revolving Santa Rosa’s issues. Take, for instance, the annexation of Roseland. In a June interview on KRCB, Combs says she’s doing her part to implement the happiness initiative by listening to citizen concerns. The Happiness Initiative can be implemented in day-to-day life, as well. Facebook Is Making Us Unhappy, Fact. We Ask Top Happiness Experts For Advice On Switching Off (PICTURES) Unlike the Cyberdyne Corporation from The Terminator, we don't have to wait for Facebook to go sentient and start taking over the world by making decisions for us.
We're already doing that ourselves. According to a recent study, psychologists have found that Facebook could be increasing our levels of unhappiness. If this sounds like something you think people have cooked up to crowbar you off Facebook, there is science behind it that confirms what we've known for a while: we need to start creating boundaries between technology and ourselves. Study leader Dr Ethan Kross, from the University of Michigan in the US, said: "On the surface, Facebook provides an invaluable resource for fulfilling the basic human need for social connection. Quite sobering, isn't it? So, what can you do about it? The first step is always the hardest. "Secondly, all of us have a built-in need to communicate. "What I am saying here is that we need to understand the power of an e-mail or Facebook alert.

A report from the foundation has confirmed that a daily dose of nature boosts happiness and wellbeing - good news for Whistler. The foundation asked more than 10,000 Canadians and 250 workplaces to participate in what it called the 30x30 Nature Challenge. Those participating were challenged to get outside for half an hour a day for 30 consecutive days. Trent University Researcher Dr. "We found that participation in the 30x30 Nature Challenge almost doubled their time spent outside during the month and reduced their screen time by about 4.5 hours per week," said Nisbet of the spring report.
Nisbet reported the research indicated workplace participants said they felt more productive on the job. According to the foundation, the results of the challenge are consistent with growing evidence that even brief nature contact enhances positive mood and reduces stress. "Nature is our great source of inner peace," said Alberti. Maximize Your Inner Happiness, With One Simple Mindfulness Practice | Marguerite Manteau-Rao. I would like to share a little known mindfulness practice that can make a big difference in how we live each moment. It requires that we pay attention to the quality of our experience. And it is remarkably simple! How we feel falls into three categories: pleasant, unpleasant or neutral. Most of us don't stop long enough to notice, and yet this is precisely what we need to do if we are to maximize our inner happiness.
The practice goes like this: 1. 2. 3. 4. We can take this practice into our daily life. We also understand the nature of things as they really are. We have little control over outer conditions, but we can definitely influence how we choose to respond. This practice will allow you to maximize your inner happiness. By Elise Proulx, Greater Good Science Center Fifteen years after emerging as a major scientific movement, it’s clear that positive psychology -- the study of what brings happiness and meaning in life -- is not just a fad.
The field is reaching new levels of breadth and depth: Having established its core themes and principles during its first decade, it is now getting deeper and more precise in its exploration of what it takes to truly flourish in life. The growth of positive psychology was evident last month at the International Positive Psychology Association’s (IPPA) third bi-annual World Congress on Positive Psychology in downtown Los Angeles. A truly international crowd gathered for four days of workshops and symposia on everything from neuroplasticity and mindfulness to positive organizations and positive psychology in film.
As Vallerand suggests, the leaders of positive psychology have always prided themselves on delivering scientific findings with clear practical applications. 1. Many in the UAE workforce are over-worked and over-stressed, and in such a scenario, being a happy person is not easy. Take the case of Penny Oscar, a British national working in Dubai.
She’s in the PR industry and believes it is very difficult to be happy at work if the atmosphere is not conducive. “In our industry, we are always trying to keep everybody happy – the clients and the media – and whilst doing, so we become the most unhappy ones. Most of us here work long hours. We don’t even have time to talk to people besides work with pressure building by the hour. This is just not a useful piece of advice, try working 9 to 9 for a couple of years then think up of ideas to stay happy,” she says without wishing to name the company she works for. And while there is no magic wand that will make workplace woes disappear completely, bigger problems can be made lighter if we try a bit harder.
“Job satisfaction is a personal choice and it is one that we make every day. . #1 Be happy to have a job. The Correlation between Money and Happiness. Oney and happiness have been married and divorced umpteen times by economists. A recent study by University of Michigan professors Betsey Stevenson and Justin Wolfers united moolah and mirth after Richard Easterlin, an economist and professor at the University of South Carolina, separated them in 1974. While the Easterlin Paradox stated that rise in income does not necessarily increase happiness, the new research refutes it by proving that the higher the income or the GDP (Gross Domestic Product), the more happy the person or the country is. No conditions apply. Between the two polar studies, several researchers tried to bring money and happiness together by establishing a threshold till which they hold hands before parting ways.
For instance, in 2003, British economist Richard Layard set $15,000 as the point beyond which money does not fetch happiness. In his 2005 work, Layard reset the point at $20,000 a year. This article appeared in the Forbes India magazine of 23 August, 2013. Dear Diary: Who Am I? “What do you wish you could tell your 13-year-old self?” This is a common parlor-game sort of question, leading to warm and fuzzy discussions about how difficult adolescence is and how we wouldn’t want to be teenagers again. Pink has even turned it into a song, “Conversations With My Thirteen Year Old Self.” But in a twist on that, I am finding that my 13-year-old self has some things to tell me. I kept a diary from the age of 12 until I was 35, which is more years ago than I care to admit. I wrote at least a few sentences every night, missing only a day or two here and there, until my 30s, when I tapered off and eventually stopped.
But every five to 10 years, usually when I’m in some sort of crisis or transition, I pull those diaries out and reread them. Yes, they are just as cringe-inducing as you might imagine, although I try to hold compassion for myself. Delving into the past is, of course, a mainstay of psychotherapy. The diaries give me perspective.
How To Be Happy: 8 foundational principles of deep & lasting happiness. Happiness may not be quite as simple as some of the self-help gurus suggest, but neither is it as far out of reach as the panicky headlines of the evening news implore you to believe. This isn’t about peppy giddy euphoria — though that’s nice too. Before diving deeper, let me clarify what I mean by “happiness.” I am not referring to the “Oh yay, I found a ten dollar bill in my coat pocket!” Fleeting peppiness, nor to the “OMG my team just won the [big sports tournament prize]” adrenaline-fueled giddiness, nor to the “I finally graduated / he just proposed / we got the new house we wanted” quick spike of euphoria that gradually fades.
No doubt these are all happy moments in their own right, and I wish for you many such moments in your life, but they’re not the kind of happy at topic today. Instead, I’m speaking specifically about the deep, abiding happiness that exists with a consistency and resilience the peppiness, giddiness and euphoria lack. Principle 2: Get energized Principle 4: Laugh! The 75-Year Study That Found The Secrets To A Fulfilling Life. What if there was a study dedicated to unearthing the secrets to a happy and purposeful life? It would have to be conducted over the course of many decades, following the lives of real people from childhood until old age, in order to see how they changed and what they learned. And it would probably be too ambitious for anyone to actually undertake. Only, a group of Harvard researchers did undertake it, producing a comprehensive, flesh-and-blood picture of some of life’s fundamental questions: how we grow and change, what we value as time goes on, and what is likely to make us happy and fulfilled.
The study, known as the Harvard Grant Study, has some limitations — it didn’t include women, for starters. We spoke to George Vaillant, the Harvard psychiatrist who directed the study from 1972 to 2004 and wrote a book about it, in order to revisit the study’s findings. Love Is Really All That Matters It’s About More than Money and Power Regardless of How We Begin Life, We Can All Become Happier.
4 Dark Sides To The Pursuit of Happiness. Fake smile? Here’s how to avoid four hurdles on the road to happiness. Healthy people want to be happy. And there’s little doubt about all the benefits of positive emotions. Amongst other things, they make us more sociable, allow us to think more flexibly and they’re associated with better physical and psychological health. It’s little wonder that pursuing happiness has become a modern obsession, an obsession that psychologists have mostly encouraged (see: 10 Easy Activities Science Has Proven Will Make You Happier Today).
But, like any emotion, it has it’s time and place. Yale University’s Dr June Gruber has spent years researching happiness and has found that sometimes, at the extremes, the search for happiness can go wrong. Gruber and her colleagues have looked at positive and negative emotions in particular and identified four dark sides to the pursuit of happiness (Gruber et al., 2013), each of which shows that sometimes the pursuit of pure happiness can go wrong: 1. 2. 3. 4.
