I've meant to do this for a while but its been busy, but still, as these are new numbers on very rare info, I want to share it with all. Mary Meeker we all know, the goddess of all internet stats, who often gives very good mobile related numbers too. She has in her latest numbers included a table of the 30 biggest countries by their smartphone population in use (see Slide number 7). So, these are the 30 countries who had at least 6 million or more smartphones in use by Q4 of 2012, ie at the end of the year.

I should immediately point out, that several of the traditional smartphone leaders in terms of penetration rate are countries whose population is so small, they can't fit onto this table, ie Finland, Norway, Denmark (each with a population of 5 million), Singapore, Ireland, New Zealand (each with a population of 4 million). He also orders it on his mobile phone. As vice president of mobile shopping at the world’s largest online retailer, Hall is in charge of making sure it’s easy, and very fast, to shop on Amazon using its apps and mobile websites. His mantra is that people should go from “wanting to buying in 30 seconds,” and Hall is a compulsive tester of the process, using his phone to buy basketball hoops, dental floss, shampoo, and even a gorilla costume for Halloween. Mobile shopping is still a sliver of overall retail, and of Amazon’s revenue. While the company doesn’t divulge details, analysts think that maybe 8 percent of the company’s $61 billion in annual sales come from phones and tablets. Amazon is tight-lipped about its operations and plans, and Hall is no exception. What’s the big thing on your mind these days? You’ve said Amazon wants to shorten the time between wanting and buying an item to less than 30 seconds.

The Next Big Thing: Responsive Icons. Honestly, this topic sounded a little bit strange to me when I first learned about responsive iconography, as we have recently adapted icon fonts in order to make sure they scale well for various device.

The Next Big Thing: Responsive Icons

However, the idea of responsive icons it takes both responsive design and iconography a step further, much further. What are these said responsive icons? Responsive icons do not mean that the width of the screen determines how big an icon is displayed; actually it means that a different icon is displayed based on the size it is presented in. This means that screen size does not matter but the size of the icons itself does. This is because some icons will be displayed in various sizes – at the same time, on the same screen. The difference between icons won’t be anything more but the quality of detail displayed.

Why is this important? With the boom of font icons, responsive website and minimalistic design our styles has changed to implement flat icons so much more in our designs.
