While staying at UWCCR, participants interact with the school’s diverse student body and learn about the school’s commitment to peace, multiculturalism, and the environment. At EARTH University, GYLI participants learn first-hand from EARTH students, who come from Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Participants stay and work with local farming families, who form an agro-ecotourism cooperative that strives for sustainability in all its facets: economic, social, and environmental. Essential questions of Year 3: “What is my role as a leader in creating sustainable world systems?” “What is my relationship to the Earth?”

SEEKHO was founded on the premise that local people could be recruited to help solve local challenges, which we found was true.

Project Potential

Because many people expressed a desire to improve educational outcomes, we focused on building a culture of education and learning by offering age-specific programs. However, as we saw many of our hardworking and talented students fall through the cracks, we realized that the challenges that villages face are interconnected, and therefore, you cannot improve education without also improving economic conditions or health. Our local staff recognized this point and as a result, began mobilizing community members and using existing resources and institutions to improve economic conditions, living standards, and health.

Recognizing these two points led us to found Project Potential, where we select, train, and support local Village Visionaries to use existing resources to connect existing resources to achieve community goals. Travel to Costa Rica – Volunteer Vacations. Hub to encourage immigrants, trigger innovation opens its doors in Mt. Airy. Philadelphia's population has been on the rise in recent years — thanks, in part, to new immigrants — and one Philadelphia neighborhood is hoping to capitalize on this influx of newcomers by giving their businesses a boost.

Hub to encourage immigrants, trigger innovation opens its doors in Mt. Airy

On Thursday evening, a group of nonprofits will launch the "Philadelphia Immigrant Innovation Hub" on the site of a former post office on Germantown Ave. in Mt. Airy. The idea — backed by a $261,500 grant from the Knight Foundation — is to give immigrant entrepreneurs space to work; one-on-one coaching to beef up their business plans; and access to loans to grow their operations for a period of about 18 months. Some of the entrepreneurs have been in business for a while and are struggling, while others just have an idea.

Ariell Johnson, owner of month-old Amalgam Comics & Coffeehouse in Kensington, once feared comic book shops. Growing up in Baltimore, Johnson was a fangirl of TV cartoons He-Man, She-Ra, Thundercats and X-Men.

As a kid, she always wanted to know the backstory for the X-Men’s “Storm,” the first black female superhero she encountered, the character who, she says, “opened my mind to the possibilities of anything is possible.” Here and there, she’d borrow a friend’s comic. But it was years before she could muster up the courage to go out and buy a book. Today, she’s the first woman on the East Coast to own her own comic book shop. Project Potential. What We Do.
