Telos Press

by Steven E. Knepper One basic account of modernity holds that we are leaving behind a rural past for an urban future. Some see in this account a story of decline. A golden age is passing. We are spiraling into a soulless, dystopian future full of alienation and excess. http://www.telospress.com/

Ceasefire Magazine

Last week, a middle-aged white man entered an office on one of London's busiest streets and threatened to blow himself and others up. Philip Miller and Taherali Gulamhussein argue the treatment of the incident by the police and the media tells us a lot about the politicised nature of counter-terrorism. http://ceasefiremagazine.co.uk/

by Philippe Leymarie The military coup which ousted Mali’s president Amadou Toumani Touré in late March has only added to the confusion across the Sahara-Sahel region, caught between Tuareg rebellions and acts of terrorism by North Africa’s al-Qaida (...) by Alain Gresh The Syrian people, like the Egyptians and others across the Arab world, are reviving the desires and ambitions that they abandoned after the Arab defeat in the 1967 war. Le Monde diplomatique - English edition

We are no longer so excited as formerly by the account of trips on the surface … The mind is stretched, uncomfortably sometimes, but with a new fascination, to speed and profundity, to the thought of worlds that lie a million light-years away from us, to the worlds that recede in evolutionary time beneath the lens, to the thought even that they merge or that by some extraordinary trick of relativity the smaller may contain the large. There is an affinity between the telescope and the microscope, between the discovery of stellar space and the discovery of the atom. 1 Watson-Baker’s book on microphotography appeared as the second of two volumes inaugurating a new series launched by The Studio publishing house under the rubric of “The New Vision.” Like its companion volume, Le Corbusier’s Aircraft , it was very much a meditation on seeing from above, a reflection on the affective and epistemic dimensions of looking downward.

THE EXILED – MANKIND'S ONLY ALTERNATIVE

http://exiledonline.com/ A man shot himself on April 4th in the very center of Athens. He is the latest in hundreds of suicides during and because of the crisis. Dimitris Christoulas chose the place (Syntagma Square) and the time (rush hour) to pass his message… The depressingly familiar dead-end life that One L. Goh found himself in — surrounded by petty scams as revealed in the ex-staffer’s lawsuit and the bleak performance of the school’s graduates, combined with the back-to-back deaths of two family members — could make a lot of sane people desperate and enraged and suicidal… One thing that the historical record makes obviously clear is that Adam Smith and his laissez-faire buddies needed brutal government policies to whip the English peasantry into a good capitalistic workforce willing to accept wage slavery

The Big Picture - Boston.com

After 10 years of civil war, Sierra Leone is at peace. Charles G. Taylor, the former president of Liberia and once a powerful warlord, was convicted April 26 by an international tribunal of 11 counts of planning, aiding and abetting war crimes committed in Sierra Leone during it's civil war in the 1990s. Taylor was guilty of involvement in crimes against humanity and war crimes, including murder, rape, slavery and the use of child soldiers. Prosecutors alleged that Taylor, from his base in neighboring Liberia, directed and armed the rebels and because of that, bears direct responsibility for the results of that war.

Jason Gregory's products are the intersection of creativity and usefulness. He has worked Makr into something more than just leather and canvas. Makr, at it's core, is more than just a desire to put out bags and wallets and stools. It's about challenges and the desire to create. It's about limitations and restrictions and how you can create things that are useful and wonderful. What we surround
