On curation. The late-nineties analogy of "surfing the Internet" no longer works. The explosion in digital content makes the experience less of a breezy ride on a wave of crafted material, and more of an attempt to cut through a leafy jungle with a blunt scythe. And blindfolded. As a result, filtering has become more and more important as a way to establish quality and relevance to a personal experience of consuming digital content.

The concept that underpins this, is curation – a hand-picked selection of material. Why is curation now so important? Philip John Why has curation become such a hotly-talked-about concept? An increase in the ease of publishing brought about by the web has led to an abundance of information, and the response from consumers has been a desire to re-focus on topic niches to avoid drowning in information overload. Have we moved on from the old philosophies of the web, where web managers forbid anyone to link to their sites (particularly deep linking) without asking? Not quite. Google. NEW YORK, April 27, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- In April of 2011 200 content consumers and web surfers were surveyed for the "Digital Lifestyle Information Survey 2011," which finds that consumers are facing a torrent of data growing faster than ever before. Results prove that the continued growth of content and data creation, without new ways to manage the consumer experience, will create catastrophic results for business productivity and people's personal lives and wellbeing.

The impact is widespread. A stunning 48.5% of the survey respondents said that they where connected to the web: "from the moment I wake up until the moment I go to bed. " The majority (64.2%) said that the information coming at them today had grown by more than 50% compared with last year. A staggering 72.7% described their data stream as: "A roaring river," "a flood," or "a massive tidal wave," Said Steven Rosenbaum, CEO of Magnify.net and author of Curation Nation, who fielded the survey: "What do you do to cope? " Content Dilemma: Big Benefits With Big Hurdles. Food Network Star. The Seven Needs of Real-Time Curators. I keep hearing people throw around the word “curation” at various conferences, most recently at SXSW. The thing is most of the time when I dig into what they are saying they usually have no clue about what curation really is or how it could be applied to the real-time world.

So, over the past few months I’ve been talking to tons of entrepreneurs about the tools that curators actually need and I’ve identified seven things. First, who does curation? Bloggers, of course, but blogging is curation for Web 1.0. Look at this post here, I can link to Tweets, and point out good ones, right? That’s curation. But NONE of the real time tools/systems like Google Buzz, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, give curators the tools that they need to do their work efficiently.

As you read these things they were ordered (curated) in this order for a reason. This is a guide for how we can build “info molecules” that have a lot more value than the atomic world we live in now. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 1. 1. Web Video Gets Curated, and Mobile - Fast. Four years ago, when Joy Marcus left a good gig at TimeWarner in 2007 to lead the U.S. operations of a relatively unknown web video company--the move looked risky to say the least.

Marcus remembers that first year as a 'battle to kill the pirates.' "I spent probably the first year of my life at Dailymotion making sure that we could be a legitimate business in the United States. We achieved that with a lot of pain", say Marcus today. There were just one million uniques watching the service when she arrived, and after she removed content she couldn't monetize--that number dropped to almost zero. Marcus had a plan. As Viacom was suing YouTube, Marcus was able to engineer a deal to get Viacom content on Dailymotion. So--is her plan to take on YouTube? So if YouTube wins in search, where does Dailymotion win? "We are a very curated environment. Marcus grew up in TV at MTV Networks. The landscape today is real-time, multi-platform, and most importantly she says, mobile. How Curation Can Rescue Great Content From The Tyranny Of The Timeline.

Posted by Tom Foremski - April 21, 2011 When I first started blogging in 2004, I didn't like the way blogging software gradually pushed older stories off the page and into the archives. It tended to discourage me from writing some posts because I didn't want to lose better, or what I thought were more important posts, from the home page. Because once articles enter the archives it is like disappearing into a deep well. They are gone. And search won't help because search only works if you know something is there. This tyranny of the timeline, where each new post pushes one more post into obscurity, still continues today and it has accelerated as the amount of new content rises to ever greater levels. That's one reason why I published my book, "In My Humble Opinion: Notes from a SIlicon Valley Watcher. " Online curation is another way to do it. Google's Search For Quality...
