The Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence (RBA) celebrates transformative urban places distinguished by their economic and social contributions to our nation’s cities. Winners offer creative placemaking solutions that transcend the boundaries between architecture, urban design and planning and showcase innovative thinking about American cities. One Gold Medal of $50,000 and four Silver Medals of $10,000 will be awarded. Projects must be a real place, not just a plan or a program, and be located in the 48 contiguous United States. Award winners may use prize money in any way that benefits the project. Each biennial award cycle is documented with detailed case studies about the winners and lessons learned about urban development in America. INTRODUCTION Milan is the second-most populous city in Italy, The city proper has a population of 1.3 million, whilst the Milan metropolitan area has a population of over 4 million. The city is a major world fashion and design capital. There also important museums, theatres and world recognised landmarks such as the Milan Cathedral, the fifth largest cathedral in the world and Santa Maria delle Grazie, decorated with Leonardo da Vinci paintings and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Milan attracts over 6 million visitors a year. Expo 2015 is the next scheduled Universal Exposition after Expo 2012, and will be hosted by Milan, Italy, between 1 May and 31 October 2015. The theme chosen for the 2015 Milan Universal Exposition is Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life. Attendants to the Expo are expected to include over 130 countries plus a significant number of international organisations.
