The Exploding Dots Experience - The Global Math Project. 21 Ideas for the First Week of School. As I gear up to start planning the upcoming first week of school, I am suddenly reminded that I never got around to blogging about what I did during the first week of school LAST year in it's entirety. I made a list, and I was shocked to find out that I did 21 different activities last year. I knew we did a bunch, but even I was shocked by that number! So, I've decided to blog about those activities in the hopes that it will inspire me to get started planning for this year!

It is important to note that all of my students did not complete all of these activities. Getting to Know You Quizzes - This was my second year to start out the first day of class with a quiz. Here's last year's quiz: When students insist that they can't possible take this quiz because they don't know you, just ask them to make an educated guess. I usually give students around five minutes to complete the quiz. I take each student's quiz after school on the first day and return them first thing on the second day.

A couple of weeks ago, I posted one of my favorite websites for math talks by Steve Wynborney. If you don’t know his website, I would totally check it out. There is so much on there! Kids love it. Today in math class, we finished up our fraction unit. I decided to give the students an opportunity to use all of the great sites that we have bookmarked! Here are the ones the students decided to use. Freckle – – in Freckle, kids play a game while they are answering mathematics questions.

Polyup – – This one is recommended by youcubed.org. Solve Me – In this website, Solve Me, students are given a number that they need to create to balance a hanging scale. Freckle does have a paid subscription, but all the others are free. While I do prefer to have students doing high level tasks with a group, this was a nice change for them. Like this: Like Loading...
