The Capabilities Your Organization Needs to Sustain Innovation. Why are some organizations able to innovate again and again while others hardly innovate at all? How can hundreds of people at a company like Pixar Animation Studios, for example, work together to produce blockbuster after blockbuster over nearly two decades – a record no other filmmaker has ever come close to matching? What’s different about Pixar that enables it not only to achieve, but also to sustain innovation? It’s a crucial question.

In recent years, many people have sought to understand how organizational innovation works, hoping to shed light on the broader and deeper dynamics and principles at play. Amidst this swirl of inquiry, however, there has been less attention given to the precise nature of organizing for innovation, the capabilities that drive discovery, and above all, how to lead innovation successfully. Consider Thomas Edison, perhaps the greatest American inventor of the early 20th century. So how does it work? Three Capabilities of Innovation Creative abrasion. Flock - Smarterer.

Institute for management studies. Overcome Your Biases and Build a Great Team. I had an unlikely journey to the top. Born in India, I arrived in the U.S. in January 1968 as a young 22-year old with $8 in his pocket and an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from IIT Bombay. Thirty-one years later, I became Chairman and CEO of a global Fortune 300 company. How did this happen? I was fortunate, to be sure. But there is a deeper lesson to my story that I hope will help others build exceptional, and exceptionally diverse, teams. During my tenure (1999-2009) as Chairman and CEO of speciality materials company Rohm and Haas, we had one of the most diverse leadership teams in our industry—and perhaps in corporate America—with the top 50 composed of more than a mere sprinkling of men and women from all parts of the world and in every skin color—white, yellow, brown, and black.

But Rohm and Haas wasn’t always like that. Your organization must strongly believe that diversity is critical for long-term success. Expand the traditional notion of mentoring. CEO Rajiv L. Gupta offers counsel on topics including CEOs. Gupta, who was at Rohm & Haas for 38 years before its sale to Dow Chemical Co. in 2009, fed on his experience in a recent talk at Drexel University's Center for Corporate Governance, an eight-year-old group run by finance professor Ralph Walkling. The center counts CEOs of Vanguard, Campbell Soup Co., and other big firms on its advisory board. Members share war stories, argue best practices, and test ethical questions - because whom can a CEO consult, if not another CEO? "We're trying to raise the bar for corporate governance, so board members can make better decisions, and be sensitive to issues," said Richard Jaffe, a partner at Duane Morris L.L.P., who chairs the advisory board.

Directors at big companies can collect as much for attending a few meetings as a typical worker earns in a year. It's a big job, Gupta insists. Here is Gupta's list of director priorities: Picking the CEO "If you get it wrong, the consequences are huge. Strategy Risk Executive pay Owners Behavior. PeerWise. Hallo Dropbox – Teil 1. Stop me if you heard this one: A sociologist gives a TED talk and decides to find out whether the conference’s success is best explained by the viral reach of its videos and thus McLuhan (theorist of globalization and communication)—or the famed intimacy of its gatherings and therefore Goffman (theorist of social interaction). Then there’s a fire (almost) right next to Glenn Greenwald (mental note, avoid, trouble follows him), a mad dash, a close encounter with some hot objects, an unbuckled shoe and a face plant (almost) right before she steps onstage.

Eighteen minutes later, she finds the answer to her question: Durkheim! (Note to non-sociologists: This is funny because Durkheim, a revered founder of sociology, is a theorist of industrialization and badly out-of-fashion these days because his concerns seem so quaintly 20th century.) It’s Durkheim that best explains what and who makes TED work so well. (And her name is Jessica.) But let me back up. Then my plans met reality. Hair on fire. Theorizing the Web. Theorizing the Web happens because a dedicated committee of volunteers makes it happen. We (Nathan and PJ) are incredibly fortunate to have found so many folks who share our vision of creating the event that we all would want to attend. Having grown larger each of the last four years, Theorizing the Web is more a committee effort than ever before. We started this event, as well as the Cyborgology blog, in part, to create space for people doing theoretical work about the social implications of the Web and other digital technologies to meet, both intellectually and personally.

From the beginning, we were floored by the level interest and participation. As the community grew, it was only natural to involve active members of the community more and more in the organizing. We’d like to take a few moments to introduce the full committee and to highlight how they’ve shaped and contributed to #TtW14. Jeremy Antley (@jsantley) accounts and donations David A. General Overview Effectuation is an idea with a sense of purpose - a desire to improve the state of the world and the lives of individuals by enabling the creation of firms, products, markets, services, and ideas.

Effectual reasoning is a type of human problem solving developed from a cognitive science based study of 27 founders of companies ranging in size from $200M to $6.5B. Effectuation articulates a dynamic and iterative process of creating new artifacts in the world. Effectual reasoning is a type of human problem solving that takes the future as fundamentally unpredictable, yet controllable through human action; the environment as constructible through choice; and goal as negotiated residuals of stakeholder commitments rather than as pre-existent preference orderings. Effectuation is a logic of entrepreneurial expertise. What makes great entrepreneurs isn't genetic or personality traits, risk-seeking behavior, money, or unique vision.

Jon Kolko | Higher Calling: Driving a Return on Education. The future undergraduate degree is a mutt. It’s displayed by evidence and experiences rather than grades. It’s gathered through internships and real-world experience. And it’s about acquiring skills rather than acquiring a piece of paper.

Evidence and Experiences Rather than Grades During some recent product research, I spoke with a student who explained his strategy for class selection. The college recruiters we speak with during our product research constantly tell us “We don’t care about grades. For students, showing these interests, hobbies, and sports experiences is critical. Internships and Real-World Experience The number one industrial design program in the United States right now is the University of Cincinnati’s DAAP, and the reason is simple: students take five mandatory co-ops prior to graduating, where they work in a full-time, paid, supervised position within their discipline.

Chapter 3 Scaffolding & Cooperative Learning Both major teaching techniques topics, scaffolding and cooperative learning, have been shown to be effective for developing students' higher level thinking strategies and abilities to work independently. Some cooperative learning techniques were presented in earlier in this text. Reciprocal teaching for reading comprehension was discussed in chapter 2 while the 6PQ method of discovery learning, pair problem solving and I DREAM of A are discussed in chapters 3, 4 and 10. Scaffolding Teachers can aid intellectual development in students by providing them with information and temporary support which can be gradually decreased as the students' competence increases. At the beginning, the teacher (expert) completely guides the student's activity, modeling how to perform the task. Next, the student attempts to do the task with the teacher providing supportive cuing, assistance, and additional modeling, as needed. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Cooperative Learning 1. Strategies to enhance student self-assessment. Reflection activities Teachers often use proformae to encourage students to reflect on their learning experience. While these are convenient and provide a record of student thinking, they can become an activity devoid of any real thinking. Oral reflection, whether as a whole class or group within the class, might sometimes be more useful.

Alternatively, teachers could devote some time to questioning students about what they have recorded on their proformae and asking them for explanations.
