World War II History - World War II. In North Africa, British and American forces had defeated the Italians and Germans by 1943.
An Allied invasion of Sicily and Italy followed, and Mussolini’s government fell in July 1943, though Allied fighting against the Germans in Italy would continue until 1945. On World War II’s Eastern Front, a Soviet counteroffensive launched in November 1942 ended the bloody Battle of Stalingrad, which had seen some of the fiercest combat of the war. The approach of winter, along with dwindling food and medical supplies, spelled the end for German troops there, and the last of them surrendered on January 31, 1943. On June 6, 1944–celebrated as “D-Day”–the Allied began a massive invasion of Europe, landing 156,000 British, Canadian and American soldiers on the beaches of Normandy, France.

Those who survived the transport went to the famous "sorting" platforms. As soon as they disembarked the trains, they were divided up – women to one side, men to the other. One by one. every person passed by a medical doctor. The doctor made a split-second decision: Can we wring a bit of work out of this wretched body? There were over 100 of these medical monsters, including some of the finest doctors from the finest German hospitals. All had sworn a medical oath to uphold medical ethics and to assist humanity. The doctor would decide: Life or death. The alternative – "life" – was actually "slow death. " Slave Labor Camps Those Jews who were strong enough did not go to their immediate death, but instead to labor camps to serve as slaves for the German "masters.

By Joe Razes The company of Nepali Gurkhas and the British troops with them were trapped on Hangman’s Hill. They had fought their way onto the huge outcropping on Monte Cassino, southeast of Rome, during the fierce battle there in early 1944, only to be pinned down by withering German fire. Stuck for nine days, they had no means of communication with their lines below. American bombers dropped food and water to them, but much of it fell into German hands. Finally, three British volunteers set out toward the trapped men by three different routes. Sending messages with homing pigeons is one of the oldest methods of long-distance communication. Communications improved considerably between World Wars I and II, but pigeons were still used throughout World War II as supplemental and emergency means of communication. Children and World War Two. The death rate of children in London due to the Blitz was approximately 1 in 10 with children struggling to escape and lacking the physical strength of adults. World War 2 brought events to a child’s life which they shouldn’t have to live through. Most were separated from their families due to evacuations while others had to deal with death and loss of family. It was an emotional period and children had to grow up fast to cope with the surroundings.
