People across Japan fell silent on Wednesday to remember the thousands of victims of the tsunami that wrecked its north-east coast four years ago. But remembrance services held in Tokyo and along the flattened coastline were tinged with frustration at the slow pace of rebuilding, with almost a quarter of a million people still displaced. More than 18,000 people died on 11 March 2011 after the strongest recorded earthquake in Japan’s history triggered a tsunami that laid waste to entire towns and villages and caused a triple meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. In Tokyo, the emperor and empress led tributes to those who died, and gave encouragement to the 230,000 people who remain unable to go home, including 120,000 whose homes were irradiated by the nuclear disaster.

“I prayed at the memorial to say that we will not ever forget you, and we are managing the best we can here,” said a woman from Ishinomaki, one of the worst-hit towns. “That’s no longer possible. Abnormal Returns. AutoZone Inc’s earnings: Here’s What the Analysts are saying | The Economic Daily. Below are some Analyst comments on AutoZone Inc’s (AZO) earnings. More updates as they come in. Citi’s Kate McShane: Maintained Buy rating and price target of $545 “AZO’s solid 4.3% was well above the consensus of 3.0% and benefited from “extreme weather conditions”. The auto parts retailers all appear to be seeing a nice lift from the recent weather trends but AZO’s commentary around deferrable maintenance products remaining challenged indicates that industry demand may continue to be challenged by macro factors but we think this also reflects another leg of opportunity once that pent-up demand is released.”

Deutsche Bank’s Mike Baker: Maintained Hold rating and price target of $470 “Consensus was 3.0% and had been increasing. On a two year basis, the stacked comp accelerated to 2.5% from 1.1%. “Although not a perfect quarter, we think the solid comp should be enough to hold the stock momentum, particularly because the spending overrun appears discretionary in nature” Two Auto-Parts Retailers Gain Moats From Growing Cost Advantages, Industry Consolidation. O'Reilly and Advance have expanded their store bases through acquisitions and organic growth, enhancing their cost advantages. Inventory availability drives productivity in the auto-parts retail sector, so specialty retailers locally stock tens of thousands of slow-moving SKUs, contributing to some of the retail industry’s lowest inventory turns. However, large industry players can offset much of this cost by negotiating significantly lower product acquisition expenses and more favorable payment terms from vendors.

For instance, though O’Reilly’s inventory only turned 1.4 times in 2013, the company mitigated the working capital burden by achieving an 87% accounts payable/inventory ratio and earned gross margins exceeding 50%. By reducing these costs, O’Reilly can economically invest in more inventory than smaller peers and drive increased traffic through greater availability. O'Reilly's Management Sets the Example We assign O'Reilly an Exemplary stewardship rating. Gregory L. AutoZone | Auto Parts & Accessories | Repair Guides & More.
