So often a humorous photograph undermines the subject matter or the medium itself and leaves the image feeling like a ploy for cheap laughs. But when it works, when composition and moment and environment come together just right, and the photographer is clever enough to know when and how to press the shutter, a humorous photograph can have a tremendous impact. Hajdu Tamas is the kind of photographer who is not afraid to point his camera at the absurdity of life, even when that life is hard. His photographs of the minutia in small-town Romania present delightful juxtapositions of the old ways of doing things and the new direction in which its residents are trying to move.

During these 37 years, the country was subjected to the USSR. For its inhabitants this meant being watched, censored, and deprived.
The socialist system influenced every sphere of life. The socialist food distribution system barely functioned, tanks rolled along the streets. Niedenthal's life would make for a great film. The socialist surveillance system impeded him from developing his pictures in Poland. Chris Niedenthal is one of Europe's most respected photojournalists. If you‘ve ever lived in a popular tourist destination, you’ll be familiar the kind of guided tours Ross Paxton has been capturing for the past three years while completing an MA in photojournalism and documentary photography at London College of Communication. Shot using a large format camera, the project was inspired by a bus tour he took on a trip back to his home town, Whitby, and he was struck by the image of the bus load of tourists as they passed the town’s landmark Abbey. “I felt as though I was looking into the past and the passengers were looking forward into their futures, and since we were moving, it was like past, present and future had been flattened into one moment,” he says. The York-based photographer estimates he’s now taken pictures of 35 tours in total, starting off locally then moving further afield, but always trying to include “a relic, sign or important monument from that particular town in each image”.

We recently spoke to London-based photographer Jim Naughten about his stunning portrait series of the Herero tribe members of Namibia. How did this series come about? What was your inspiration? “I traveled in Africa after finishing college. I bought an old motorbike and more or less stumbled across Namibia on my journey. It was instantly spellbinding—the extraordinary landscapes, the colorful and varied inhabitants and their surreal and often brutal history.
I photographed the same tribe back then with my old film camera but always wanted to return to make a more extended project. How did you put the project together? “It was quite physical, camping every day, driving thousands of miles, working every day in the heat and dust, cleaning and charging the cameras, putting up the tents, cooking, cleaning, looking for subjects, photographing, then putting up the tent again and so on. How did you come up with the visual approach? Do you know how the subjects feel about their portraits? Young Self-Taught Photographer Captures Wanderers Against Magnificent Landscapes. Self-taught Canadian photographer Elizabeth Gadd described her photography niche better, perhaps, than anybody else when she said, “I, uh… shoot landscapey stuff… with people in them.” That, however, is something of an understatement. The 21-year-old photographer’s body of work does, indeed contain “landscapey stuff with people in them,” but that hardly does the spectacular vistas she photographs justice.
Gadd started taking pictures in 2007, but didn’t really get serious until 2010 when she embarked on a 365 project of self portraits. By the end of that project she had found her landscapey, people-dappled niche, and everything that has followed has expanded on that as she continues to explore the forests, hills, mountains and ocean within driving distance of her home town of Vancouver, BC. The resulting portraits are, as she described recently in an interview with Phelarn, “[an] attempt to display human interaction with nature in a positive and peaceful way.”

Intimacy, Love, and the Aging Body: Photographer Marna Clarke Documents Her Life Over 70 (NSFW) What happens when a photographer gives up photographing for 14 years? In the case of Marin-based photographer Marna Clarke, she returns to it after her partner Igor put a camera back in her hands. After a few years of fine art work, she began work on You’re Not Getting Any Younger when she was 70, unveiling private moments shared with the man who had encouraged her. By turning her lens inward, Clarke takes ownership of her body, not only as a woman but also as a human being coming to terms with aging. In a world that too often denies the sensual desires of those past middle age, she both validates and celebrates the joys and sorrows of the maturing self, riding each emotional tide with determination, frankness, and grace.
What was the impetus to get rid of all your photo equipment and leave your photo career behind? What was it like returning to photography after a 13-year break? When I'm asked about my approach to photography, this is the best description I could offer. I always have a small compact camera in my pocket when I am dream walking. Magnum Photos, an international photo agency founded by photographers like Robert Capa and Henri Cartier-Bresson, is coordinating a project to dig up long lost images from their most renowned photographers, allowing unseen photos to break into the wild after many years. Magnum enlisted legendary photographers from Bruce Gilden to Bieke Depoorter to "rescue a work from oblivion," selecting an image that, for some reason or another, went unpublished or unnoticed, while remaining close to the photographer's heart. 1.

These communities take on many forms, but they share a common history. Governments around the world have failed to take responsibility for this massive urban migration. Although squatters face many challenges, these settlements are extremely creative and vibrant places.
