One Health (Online course) - University of Basel. One Health Story – Zoonotic Disease Awareness. Portal CFMV/CRMV's.

Held at Rockefeller University in New York City, the symposium set priorities for an international, interdisciplinary strategy for combating threats to the health of life on Earth. Challenges In today’s globalized world, no one sector of society or single professional discipline has enough knowledge and resources to prevent the emergence or resurgence of diseases. Goals To urge world leaders, civil society, the global health community, and institutions of science to holistically approach the prevention of epidemic/epizootic disease and the maintenance of ecosystem integrity by: What WCS is Doing The One World – One Health effort has held workshops in India, China, and Brazil, promoting its 12 “Manhattan Principles”.

CDC uses a One Health approach by working with physicians, ecologists, and veterinarians to monitor and control public health threats. We do this by learning about how diseases spread among people, animals, and the environment.

Operationalizing “One Health” One Health - OIE. One Health at a glance While not a new concept, the OIE endorses the “One Health” approach as a collaborative and all-encompassing way to address, when relevant, animal and public health globally. This collaboration should not be limited to only the international level, but must be translated as a new and fundamental paradigm at national levels. Promoting a collaborative “One Health” approach at national levels will result in a deeper and sustainable political support for the coordinated prevention of high public health and animal impact diseases at the human-animal interface.

Recent efforts in controlling emerging pandemic diseases of animal origin and contributions towards pandemic preparedness have re-emphasized the need for enhanced collaboration on reducing risks of zoonotic potential including foodborne diseases and severe animal diseases at its source. OneHealth - Public Health Association Australia. One Health has been defined as 'the collaborative effort of multiple disciplines' working locally, nationally and globally 'to attain optimal health for people, animals and the environment' (American Veterinary Medical Association, 2008). The One Health movement has had a focus on infectious diseases and particularly on emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.

About 75% of emerging infectious diseases arise in animals, including wildlife. Understanding and responding to these diseases requires contributions from the medical profession, from animal health experts, from wildlife specialists and ecologists, and from environmentalists, economists and social scientists. The One Health approach is also applicable to non-infectious diseases and in addressing broader issues such as food safety and food security. Using a One Health approach is relevant to research, to operational activities (such as prevention, preparedness and response), and to policy development. Co-Convenors: Members: NEW! EcoHealth. Spay or neuter your pets. Don’t feel you can afford to do so? I ask how can you afford not to? It is far more expensive to have a litter of kittens or puppies than the surgery will cost. But if finances are tight, there are solutions in the US. I learned a lot about the role that Humane Alliance, a non-profit, plays in reducing the number of unwanted dogs and cats in the US at the PetFix Hero Celebration event held June 28, 2012.

Interestingly, I attended a webinar hosted by the American Veterinary Medical Association earlier that day based on the fears and concerns some in the veterinary community have about non-profits that provide veterinary services. Most veterinary clinics are small businesses run by veterinarians and their staff as a “for-profit” clinic. But getting back to what I learned about the Humane Alliance programs. The One Health course is an inaugural course in the newly created University Seminar program, which furthers Tufts' goal to prepare leaders with a rich and textured understanding of the world in all its complexity and diversity.

Major aims of the University Seminar are to enhance the interface between research and teaching, to develop new research questions through trans-disciplinary approaches to a global issue, and to develop innovative teaching and learning methods that can be applied to the larger Tufts community, and its existing and emerging programs. In the One Health course, faculty from all three campuses will provide expertise and guidance for individual and group teaching and learning, to help better understand the complex nature of these problems and to reveal innovative solutions.

Emerging challenges to human, animal and ecosystem health demand novel solutions. Please note that the course as presented here does not contain the full content of the course as taught at Tufts. Professionals trained in environmental and global health study the impact of our surroundings upon human health. Given the global nature of our environment, this research often takes on an international perspective.

Traditionally, environmental health research was defined exclusively to the study of environmental toxins and their potential linkage to human diseases like asthma, cancer, and food poisoning. However, increasingly, environmental health professionals are also becoming concerned with how infectious diseases in the environment can affect human health. Such emerging infectious disease research looks at how environmental exposures such as dengue, antimicrobial resistant bacteria, and cholera ultimately impact human health.

At the University of Florida, the Department of Environmental and Global Health is growing rapidly and developing a broad portfolio of training programs.
