Coming up with a solution for a lightweight, non-permanent solution was the challenge. I didn’t want something heavy that could fall on the baby and while vinyl or handpainted letters would have worked, it wasn’t exactly the look I was hoping for.

Boat quilt - VOILA!

A custom order from a friend back home in Sweden. Directions said "Blue and white but not with boat motifs". At first I made big 10 inch squares like in my Wedding Quilt, but with the traditional patterns and only blue, white and a sprinkle of red it didn't feel right. So I cut up the 10 inch squares to 5 inch squares instead. And I choose to put the squares in a diagonal pattern. Over the past month or so, I've been very touched when fellow bloggers have contacted me to let me know they've awarded me with blogger awards of one variety of another.

Crooked Seams

Jen of Ellison Lane Quilts was kind enough to nominate me for the Stylish Blogger Award, and Jen of The Quilty Home was nice enough to nominate me for the Versatile Blogger Award. The rules for both awards are pretty similar - 7 things about yourself and then you tag other bloggers you like for the award. Forgive me for lumping these awards together into one post. So first, 7 things about myself: 1. Hexagon Project. An update on my hexagon project...

I clearly watch too much TV because I have over 700 hexagons made. Yikes. And I've finally decided on a layout. Initially I was going to do scrappy flowers with two rings, centred and sashed in white hexagons, kind of like this. More Hanky Panky! Oftentimes, you might want to use lines of machine quilting that surround your blocks to anchor the three layers of your quilt top together, or you may just enjoy the pattern created from these lines of machine quilting. Regardless, there is a method of quilting called “in the ditch” which uses almost-hidden lines of machine quilting to anchor the key seam lines in your quilt. This method involves stitching right next to the seams between the blocks, sashing and borders in your quilt top, on the side with the least bulk. If you pressed your seam allowances to one side of the seam, then your needle is kept on the opposite side without the seam allowances.

It is important to stitch as straight (or evenly on curves) as possible, keeping the stitching line as close to the seam as possible. This is a good place to use your machine walking foot. Here is an example of how not to stitch in the ditch. This next photo shows a well-executed result. Happy Quilting, The Tech Editors.
