But in the hubbub of life I managed to put the rest of the project off. But it's okay. Youtube. Youtube. Youtube. Youtube. Youtube. Youtube. Youtube. Youtube. Youtube. Youtube. Youtube. Original Paintbox Blocks Tutorial. Here is a quick tutorial on how to make the blocks I used for this quilt.

Original Paintbox Blocks Tutorial

My quilt used 64 blocks -- 32 sets of two. Each block is 6.5" once sewn (7" before). For each set of two, you'll need approximately 9" x 15" of a solid fabric and a coordinating print. (I used Kona cotton for my solids.) Besides standard rotary-cutting tools, no special tools are needed. Stack your fabrics on top of one another for cutting. Start with the pieces you cut from the 3" strip, pairing the smaller printed strips with the solid square and the smaller solid strips with the printed square. Sew the strips to opposite sides of the squares as shown, pressing seams open. Next, take one of the coordinating narrow 9" strips and one of the wide strips.

Press seams open. Repeat the last few steps on your second block. Now, you're going to add a second set of strips to your block, but this time it will be important to pay attention to which sides are being paired with narrow and wide strips. A friend gave me the pattern* a couple of years ago, but after I made the first sample, I lost the pattern! Luckily, I remembered what to do, and wrote up my own instructions.

There was no indication of who had designed it, so if you know whose pattern this is, please do let me know. *The original was a one page, hand drawn pattern that looked like it had been photocopied a number of times. Let's get started! You will need: (2) squares of fabric, between 8" and 12". A piece of batting the same size as the fabric (or a little bigger). (4) coordinating buttons, optional. A walking foot, if you have one. Step 1: Layer the fabric, right sides together, on top of the batting. Step 2: Stitch 1/4" seam around perimeter, leaving an opening of about 4" on one side.

Step 6: Quilt as desired. I'm actually getting it done... I'm following Vicki's lead and quilting for an hour first thing in the morning.

Where Creativity Blossoms: Vintage Hexagon Quilt Find!

I was so excited when I found this quilt at the first Vintage Flea and Find Market hosted by Glitter Workshop. So – the quilt is pretty big so please forgive that I didn’t get the best overall picture of it…but here it is! All the pieces you see are tiny 2-inch hexagons cut from scraps of polyester and they’re all hand pieced together. Turn One Fat Quarter Into 5 Yards Of Bias Tape. 5 beautiful yards of bias tape that is! I discovered this method a few months back and it rocked my (small, fabric-centric) world. The way I always did it required cutting the first triangle off but then I was stuck with this wasted triangle.

This method uses that triangle so there's no waste. Rita Hodge is a quilt maker, pattern designer and driving force behind the very colorful and popular Red Pepper Quilts blog.

She loves fabric and makes quilts in a bid to work through her very significant fabric stash. Rita’s work space is located in the corner of her home which once used to be a dining area. Much of her fabric and quilting library is stored and displayed in an over-sized dresser that once housed some very fine (but rarely used) china. As much as Rita dreams of her own sewing room (dare she say studio?) With storage space for all the fabric, she enjoys being around her family whilst sewing, intermittently stirring the hot pot on the stove, and the dog at her feet.
