National Review Online. Salon.com. Musharraf back in Pakistan from exile - Central & South Asia. Pervez Musharraf, Pakistan's former president, has arrived in Karachi, returning to the country after more than four years in self-imposed exile to run in upcoming elections. Musharraf landed at Karachi's Jinnah International airport as scheduled on Sunday, aboard a commercial flight from Dubai. The airport was heavily secured after a death threat against Musharraf by the Pakistani Taliban on Saturday. Al Jazeera's Imran Khan, reporting from Karachi, said Musharraf, who was the former chief of staff and a special forces commando, was not the kind of man to scare easily. "They have been trying to send me to the hells since 9/11, which means it's 12 years now," said Musharraf before boarding his flight in Dubai.
"These statements could be planted even from anywhere, they may be true or untrue, so I'm not the kind to get scared of mere statements," he added. "But Pakistan's political scene is one of deal-making, one of road-blocks," said Khan. New York Post - New York News | Gossip | Sports | Entertainment | Photos. Mitt Romney, once the main GOP frontrunner in the 2012 Presidential election, can barely generate excitement now that Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann and Herman Cain are around -- all of whom have charmed GOP voters in their own way.
Romney did catch one break, however, when would-be "it" candidate of the week Chris Christie said he's not running. Of course, "Saturday Night Live" was ready with a send-up of the New Jersey Governor for this weekend's cold open. Bobby Moynihan debuted his best Chris Christie impression in the sketch, which takes on Governor Christie's undeniable popularity as well as Romney's failed attempts to inspire the same enthusiasm. It opens with Governor Romney having a tough time at a Q&A with Republican fundraisers, until Governor Christie comes to his rescue with more than enough favorability to go around.

It's a myth that before Liberals created the social safety net that the role was performed well and admirably by charities and volunteer work. This myth is a cudgel used by zealots to demand that the government never help the poor or the needy. No, before we had a social safety net we had but one thing: chaos. Mike Konczal for Democracy Journal: The Voluntarism Fantasy Ideology is as much about understanding the past as shaping the future. And conservatives tell themselves a story, a fairy tale really, about the past, about the way the world was and can be again under Republican policies. This vision has always been implicit in the conservative ascendancy. But this conservative vision of social insurance is wrong.
Beyond the need to deflate the imaginary landscape of the contemporary right, there’s also a need for liberals to reform their project. World News. Israel Newswire (inwnews) Human rights. The Daily Beast. Anderson Cooper 360 - CNN.com Blogs.
