Photo Credit: Frank Peters Being a working futurist means that I think a lot about how people think about the future. It also means spending a lot of time with people who are also thinking about their own futures. Typically, this involves a dialogue between three distinct groups. First, there's usually a small handful of very foresighted people, who are aware of their own blind spots and biases, and who are eager and open about the prospect of soaring into a wild blue sky to gather a lot of exciting new information.

Second, there's a larger group of people who don't usually think at 50,000 feet -- but are willing to go there if they're with people they trust. Their wings aren't sturdy, and they are prone to some very common mistakes in thinking, but they're often the most gratifying group to work with. And then there's a third small group that's very resistant to the idea that anything could or should change. 1. It's good to know what your expected future is. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. Exploring Web 2.0: Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts & Social Sharing MySpace, IM and Other Social Networks The Impact of Digital Literacies on Education “The new literacies include the skills, strategies, and insights necessary to successfully exploit the rapidly changing information and communication technologies that continuously emerge in our world.

A more precise definition of the new literacies may never be possible to achieve since their most important characteristic is that they regularly change; as new technologies for information and communication continually appear, new literacies emerge (Bruce, 1997; Leu, in press a; Reinking, 1998). Other Technology Related Issues: (*** Parts of this wiki are adapted from the Wiki How To Drink From A Firehouse, by Desroches & Wall) The Myth Of AI. That mythology, in turn, has spurred a reactionary, perpetual spasm from people who are horrified by what they hear. You'll have a figure say, "The computers will take over the Earth, but that's a good thing, because people had their chance and now we should give it to the machines. " Then you'll have other people say, "Oh, that's horrible, we must stop these computers. " Most recently, some of the most beloved and respected figures in the tech and science world, including Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk, have taken that position of: "Oh my God, these things are an existential threat.

They must be stopped. " In the past, all kinds of different figures have proposed that this kind of thing will happen, using different terminology. A good starting point might be the latest round of anxiety about artificial intelligence, which has been stoked by some figures who I respect tremendously, including Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk. What do I mean by AI being a fake thing? This is not one of those. Connect. Reimagining the HE curriculum for the 21st century. Global social impact is a key feature of the evolution of higher education. Universities have always arguably been both national and international – located in a nation state, but connected in various ways with international communities. But the world of the 21st century is a very different one from that of the 11th century, when the modern university began to evolve in Bologna.

Today, in a world that is more connected and interdependent than ever before there is also an increased focus on nationalism and narrow-minded approaches to race and religion. In these times, perhaps more so than ever before in recent history, higher education institutions have an important role to play in making a meaningful contribution to the creation of dynamic and sustainable local and global communities. The creation of such communities requires much more of universities than simply ‘doing international things’. Rethinking the curriculum The intent of the curriculum is to enable learning.

Innovative Learning Environments. The Innovative Learning Environments (ILE) project has analysed how young people learn. It has studied which conditions and dynamics allow them to be able to learn better. By identifying concrete cases of innovative learning environments from all over the world, ILE has informed practice, leadership and reform through generating analysis of innovative and inspiring configurations of learning for children and young people. The distinctive contribution of the ILE project has been to analyse - with numerous international examples - innovative ways of organising learning at the micro level (learning environment) and how this connects to the meso level (networks and communities of practice) and strategies to implement learning change at the macro, system level.

Read more about the ILE project here. The goals of this project have been to serve the educational reform agenda by: 300+ Mind Expanding Documentaries. I watch a lot of documentaries. I think they are incredible tools for learning and increasing our awareness of important issues. The power of an interesting documentary is that it can open our minds to new possibilities and deepen our understanding of the world. On this list of mind expanding documentaries you will find different viewpoints, controversial opinions and even contradictory ideas.

Critical thinking is recommended. I’m not a big fan of conspiracy documentaries but I do like films that challenge consensus reality and provoke us to question the everyday ideas, opinions and practices we usually take for granted. Watching documentaries is one of my favorite methods of self education. Explore the wonder and interconnectedness of the biosphere through the magic of technology. Smart or intelligent materials are engineered to respond to their environment…These materials are embedded with their own sensors, actuators and control systems that are responsive to presence of light, temperature, pressure or other environmental conditions, and can cause the material surface to change its shape, texture, color or temperature.

When engineered at atomic or molecular scale, these materials can be made sensitive enough to human touch, just like human skin. They can even be made to heal themselves if fine cracks begin to appear inside the structure. Now, think of the products and applications that could be created out of these intelligent materials. You could have a dream mattress made to order, that will assume the most comfortable shape and texture as per your personal requirements. It could heat or cool based on your profile or your body temperature. By applying the right amount of gentle pressure, it could help you overcome fatigue. Places to go from here: Businessinsider. Shutterstock The world is going to be a very different place in 2045. Predicting the future is fraught with challenges, but when it comes to technological advances and forward thinking, experts working at the Pentagon's research agency may be the best people to ask. Launched in 1958, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is behind some of the biggest innovations in the military — many of which have crossed over to the civilian technology market.

These include things like advanced robotics, global positioning systems, and the Internet. So what's going to happen in 2045? It's pretty likely that robots and artificial technology are going to transform a bunch of industries, drone aircraft will continue their leap from the military to the civilian market, and self-driving cars will make your commute a lot more bearable. But DARPA scientists have even bigger ideas. Dr. "Imagine a world where you could just use your thoughts to control your environment," Sanchez said.

She explains: Emerging Technologies. Ted – the ultimate forum for blue-sky thinking | Technology | The Observer. So, what is TED? And, more important, why should I care? For 22 years, Ted was a conference, an exclusive ideas forum where the great and the good came to hear Al Gore talk about climate change and Bill Gates about computing, right up until four years ago, when TED Talks was launched online and promptly became an internet sensation. It's a bit like YouTube, but instead of featuring cats falling into lavatories, it has short, cutting-edge talks by the world's leading neuroscientists, behavioural economists, video artists, philosophers, particle physicists, rocket scientists, endurance athletes, Aids researchers… you name it, it's been at TED. What TED does is seek out the most interesting, unusual and potentially groundbreaking ideas on Earth and then provide a platform to share them with the world.

At the heart of it all are the conferences. Can TED change the world? It sounds awfully elitist… It is. The response has been astonishing: there are, to date, 727 talks online. It is. Tedsters? Rojava is a radical experiment in democracy in northern Syria. American leftists need to pay more attention. Photo by John Moore/Getty Images There is an astonishing story in Sunday’s New York Times about Rojava, a Kurdish region in Northern Syria that’s ruled by militant feminist anarchists. Rojava’s constitution enshrines gender equality and religious freedom. An official tells journalist Wes Enzina that every position at every level of government includes a female equivalent of equal power. Recruits to Rojava’s 6,000-strong police force receive their weapons only after two weeks of feminist instruction. Reading Enzina’s piece, it’s hard to understand how this radical experiment in democracy in one of the bloodiest corners of the world isn’t better known internationally, particularly on the left.

At the start of piece, Enzina himself isn’t quite sure Rojava is real. It sounds too fantastical: The regime of President Bashar al-Assad doesn’t officially recognize Rojava’s autonomous status, nor does the United Nations or NATO — it is, in this way, just as illicit as the Islamic State. We all experience stress, and it can actually be a good thing. But too much can take a pretty big toll. A recent video from TED-Ed explains what happens to your body when its exposed to too much stress for too long. Dr. Sharon Horesh Bergquist lays out the ins and outs of chronic stress. Chronic stress can lead to hypertension, cholesterol plaque buildup, increased chance of heart attacks, increased chance of stroke, irritable bowel syndrome, a weakened immune system, and even DNA-level changes that can shorten your lifespan. But there's no need to worry! 1. Stress causes you to breathe shallower and quicker. In. 2. Subconsciously tensing your muscles is not only a common reaction to stress, but it can also make you feel worse. Make a fist. This will keep your muscles from straining for an extended period of time and will bring you closer to relaxation. 3. Classical music featuring slower rhythms was found to reduce stress and promote long-term heart health!

Samples of gum and cheek tissue - known as oral mucosal transudate - taken that same day showed those who experienced more of these - in particular wonder and amazement - had the lowest levels of the cytokine Interleukin 6 which is a marker of inflammation. Psychologist Dr Dacher Keltner, of California University in Berkeley, said: "That awe, wonder and beauty promote healthier levels of cytokines suggests the things we do to experience these emotions - a walk in nature, losing oneself in music, beholding art - has a direct influence upon health and life expectancy. " Cytokines are chemicals necessary for herding cells to the body's battlegrounds to fight infection, disease and trauma but too many are linked with disorders like type-2 diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and even Alzheimer's. It has long been established a healthy diet and lots of sleep and exercise bolster the body's defences against physical and mental illnesses.
