En un régimen democrático moderno ya no es posible imaginar a un parlamentario, subsecretario, ministro o incluso un alcalde tomando decisiones sólo sobre la base de su propia experiencia, experticia, acudiendo a lo que se solía denominar como “olfato político”. Por el contrario, hoy en día tanto las autoridades públicas como los partidos políticos elaboran sus programas y toman sus decisiones a través de la mediación de expertos en distintas materias, la mayor parte de la veces ajenos al aparato público tradicional.

Despite your beliefs when you were 15, you can't really know everything. As a result, you often have to listen to the advice of experts as you form opinions. What kind of expert opinion has the biggest influence on your attitudes? You might think that you are most inclined to be affected by experts who agree with you. After all, there is a lot of research on that suggests that we tend to focus on information that confirms our hypotheses about the world. An interesting paper in the January, 2012 issue of by Jason Clark, Duane Wegener, Meara Habashi, and Abigail Evans suggests that the opposite may be true.

Batman: Anarky is a 1999 trade paperback published by DC Comics . The book collects prominent appearances of Anarky , a comic book character created by Alan Grant and Norm Breyfogle . Although all of the collected stories were written by Alan Grant, various artists contributed to individual stories. Dual introductions were written by the creators—both of whom introduce the character and give insight into their role in Anarky's creation and development. Featured as an antagonist in various Batman comics during the '90s, stories based on the character were highly thematic, political, and philosophical in tone.

President Obama calls income inequality a defining issue and Mitt Romney tells us that the nearly half of the US population who don’t make enough to pay income taxes are failing to take responsibility for themselves. Even without election season and a flurry of statistics to remind us, the vast majority of us realize that that the USA is a pretty unequal nation . It also should not be surprising that for much of recent human history, material wealth has not been equally divided amongst members of a society. But has it ever? Is inequality part of our evolutionary heritage?

A great way to teach our students important theories and concepts in psychology is through the use of fiction. Drawing from plots and themes of well-known novels or movies can help them gain insight into important psychological phenomena such as memory ( Memento ), autism ( Rain Man ), leadership ( Braveheart ) or prejudice ( The Color Purple ). I remember, as a psychology undergraduate student, being taught a class on Group Dynamics with the aid of William Golding's famous novel Lord of the Flies . The story is about a group of British school boys stuck on a desert island who try to govern themselves with disastrous results. Week by week we would discuss important social psychological concepts such as power, status, leadership, conformity, and intergroup conflict and connect them to important events happening in the book as the story unfolded. The Hunger Games is the modern equivalent of Lord of the Flies .

Does True Altruism Exist?
Altruism has been thought of as an ego defense, a form of sublimation in which a person copes with his anxiety by stepping outside himself and helping others. By focusing on the needs of others, people in altruistic vocations such as medicine or teaching may be able to permanently push their needs into the background, and so never have to address or even to acknowledge them. Conversely, people who care for a disabled or elderly person may experience profound anxiety and distress when this role is suddenly removed from them. Altruism as an ego defence should be distinguished from true altruism—one being primarily a means to cover up uncomfortable feelings and the other being primarily a means to some external end such as alleviating hunger or poverty.
