As 2010 is wrapping up, it is about time do a sum up of the best sites that I've featured on Best Web Gallery. Again I've selected 50 sites from different categories: personal blog, commercial, agency, portfolio, and software. In 2010, CSS design is getting more interactive. People are using jQuery and CSS animation to add interaction in their design. More designers are using custom font faces. Some have incorporated responsive web design using media query.

Symbols & signs, meaning, origin, use

This symbol is a Triskele of Triskelion. Triskelion is Greek for three-legged, which you could make of this sign with a little fantasy. There are different stories about the origin of this sign, but the most probable origin is Keltc. http://www.digiden.nl/en/symbols-and-signs/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympic_symbols The Olympic symbols are icons, flags and symbols used by the International Olympic Committee to promote the Olympic Games . Some—such as the flame, fanfare, and theme—are more common during Olympic competition, but others, such as the flag, can be seen throughout the year. The Olympic motto is the hendiatris Citius, Altius, Fortius , which is Latin for "Faster, Higher, Stronger". (The Latin words are comparative adverbs, not adjectives.) The motto was proposed by Pierre de Coubertin on the creation of the International Olympic Committee in 1894. De Coubertin borrowed it from his friend Henri Didon , a Dominican priest who, amongst other things, was an athletics enthusiast.

Manual of Traffic Signs

http://www.trafficsign.us/ Look for the graphic to find new and improved portions of this site. IMPORTANT NOTE: Although FHWA has issued a new edition of the MUTCD, they have not yet issued a new edition of the Standard Highway Signs & Markings book, so there are no details available yet on the layout or design of the signs that are added in the new MUTCD. Once the new SHS is issued, I'll start creating the new signs and adding them to this website. While that's happening, I'll update the website links to point to the new 2009 MUTCD. Until then, this site will continue to be "2003-MUTCD-compliant".

This is an information design showing how a law is made. There is a lot of information on it, but it is presented in a fun and colorful way. It resembles the game of Life, so it is very easy to relate to. Each step of the process is a different color, which makes it easy to read and tell each step apart from the others.

How can visual thinking and information design be used to make sense of a complex world? How can we evaluate and make sense of data? And how can the organization of visual information inform good (and bad) decisions?

Age effects on reading speed and visual span in peripheral vision

Abstract Purpose: Our interest in reading with peripheral vision centers on its relevance to people with central-field loss, which becomes more prevalent with old age. It has been proposed that the size of the visual span - the number of letters recognized reliably without moving the eyes - is a visual factor limiting reading speed. In this study, we asked whether the size of the visual span and reading speed show similar dependence on age in peripheral vision. Methods: Seventeen normally sighted young adults (aged 19 to 30 yrs, averaged 23.8) and old adults (aged 55 to 76 yrs, averaged 66) participated. Performance was assessed 10° from fixation in the upper and lower visual fields.
