SPOILER ALERT: Somehow, By The End Of This Post, I Will Have Convinced Myself I Have Schizophrenia — a life in translation

http://www.alifeintranslation.com/2010/11/schizophrenia/ You see, I’ve been in a little bit of a situation lately when it comes to what I consider, “entertaining reading material.” As in, “entertaining reading material” apparently, to me, is “horrifically sad and disturbing reading material, which makes you rethink who you are as a person entirely.” You should know that this post will include some spoilers to books I’ve read, but you shouldn’t stop reading here, because what I’m trying to say is that you should not read any of the books I’ve subjected myself to. Essentially, you should thank me for spoiling these books so you are not tempted to do anything crazy like read them . See, I’m what one might call a wimp.

http://notapottedplant.blogspot.com/2010/02/on-misuse-of-powerpoint.html If this isn't exactly right I don't know what else is. A good powerpoint presentation is the exact opposite of reading the slides out loud. Yet again and again I find myself in presentations where people do exactly that. It's a reminder to me that Powerpoint, intended as an aid to presentations, is much more frequently used in what can seem like a conscious effort to obfuscate. For instance, don't ever show anyone whose respect you want a slide that looks like the one to the left.

http://katak.kapoosh.net/ When is the computer considered a hindrance to learning? Some people simply think that they should be using technology in every single aspect of their teaching, simply because it is the next cool thing to do. But I beg to differ. Continue reading

By Cory Doctorow at 2:09 am Monday, Jan 24 Siobhan Ambrose went looking for a WordPress theme; of the top ten free WordPress theme sites listed on Google, eight had hidden, obfuscated, or encrypted code buried in them that rendered spammy keyword links that were part of a deceptive search engine optimization scheme; in some cases, Siobhan couldn't figure out what the offending code did and speculates that it might contain malware. Of the remaining two, one hosted themes that didn't validate. The remaining site, WordPress.org, is the only site in the first ten Google results for "free wordpress theme" whose themes don't contain deceptive backlinks, obfuscated code, or non-validating themes. http://boingboing.net/2011/01/24/top-wordpress-themes.html

Christopher Moore's History News

At the big gala on Saturday April 28 I'm thrilled to say that my novel, To the Edge of the Sea , set during the Confederation Conferences of 1864, with John A Macdonald and Mercy Coles, daughter of the PEI delegate and Father of Confederation George Coles, won the First Book Award. (I've blogged on Mercy's take on the conference goings on in this blog in October and Nov.) Judges Joan Barfoot, Christine Cowley and Katherine Gordon said: In the mid-19th century, three young Prince Edward Islanders explore their disparate futures at home and away, in a debut novel that is lyrical and precise in its descriptions of land, sea and people, and powerful in its accounts of both personal and political histories of the province and country.

The government's vision of fostering new competition is somewhat limited. The primary goal appears to be the creation of a strong, national fourth carrier in the market. The spectrum caps and foreign ownership changes are both geared toward giving a fourth player the necessary spectrum and capital to compete with Bell, Telus and Rogers. That suggests consolidation of the current smaller players in the hope of a single, stronger competitor - possibly foreign owned - challenging the incumbents.

« Maxime Fitness
