They nonetheless developed unique forms of Eucharistic liturgy. In form and content it is was very close to ancient Celtic and Gallican rites in use at the time. It also seems to have been heavily influenced by Syriac rites of the Greek speaking Byzantine Empire. It would later come to be known as the Mozarabic Rite. The Eucharistic form they developed has also been called the Visogothic Rite, the Toledan Rite, the Old Hispanic Rite and Isidorian Rite, the last because some scholars think its form was influenced by St. After the reconquest of Toledo by Christians in 1085, a dispute arose about which rite should be used in that city: the Mozarabic Rite or the Latin rite used elsewhere in many parts of Europe.

Ladino is spoken by the descendants of the Sefardim or Sephardim, Jews who were expelled from Spain in 1492. Many Moriscos continued to practice Islam, most in secret, but some did so openly. A decree issued by King Felipe II in 1566 oblidged the Moriscos to adopt Spanish language, dress and customs. A number of unsuccessful rebellions of the Moriscos led to them being relocated from Granada to other parts of Spain, particularly Castile. At the beginning of the 17th century the Moriscos were expelled from Spain to Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco. The Moriscos produced books known as aljamiados, which written in Spanish using the Arabic alphabet and were used to instruct fellow Moriscos in Islam.
