Famous landmarks like the Arc Du Triumph, the Pyramids of Giza, and the Sagrada Familia have been photographed countless times by photographers from around the world, and they are recognizable to most, if not all, of us.
But this collection of stunning aerial photographs gives us a bird’s-eye-view of these places, casting them in a totally new light. Most of the pictures are of places or things that most of us could easily identify right away. The images illustrate just how much a change in perspective can alter. It’s also worth noting that a few of these sites, like the Pyramids of Giza and the hotels in Dubai, were designed with an aerial perspective in mind. The designs of certain Dubai hotels can only be appreciated fully from above, and some theorize that the Pyramids of Giza were meant to be aligned with the stars in Orion’s Belt. For the past eleven years, New York City has paid homage to the tragedies of September 11, 2001, with Tribute in Light, two powerful beams of light projected upwards as part of the city skyline. The shape and placement of the installation echo the fallen Twin Towers and honor the victims of the 9/11 attacks as well as the many who worked as part of the relief efforts. Originally conceived just days after the attack as a “Project for the Immediate Reconstruction of Manhattan’s Skyline,” Tribute in Light is made up of 88 7,000-watt lightbulbs that create the strongest beams of light ever projected from Earth.

We had fifteen weeks to create eight films about seven accomplished photographers and one ICP board member.
In this short time we had to arrange in-person interviews with each photographer, collect all of their photography and find their stories. There were many points during production when, despite the limited time, we had to wait for resources—whether a photographer was unable to fly to New York for a scheduled interview or unable to provide us with images we needed. Despite the short timeline, we believed it was important to share the pieces we created with the photographers in advance of the awards ceremony. We didn't want any surprises for them, especially right before delivering their acceptance speeches. Yet, when we showed the videos to the photographers, they were critical—as most good artists are—of themselves and the pieces we created. In some cases, we never received the content we truly wanted.
